She looks great in the picture. What are your plans with matching her up?

I would definitely breed her to monopoly or heat wave when she gets older.  She looks like she will make some awesome steers and market heifers.  Even some breeding heifers if you get her on the right bull.

flushing her 2 monopoly has been a thought, but for what it cost and what you can get it probably wouldnt be worth it.

If she's really that good, put an Angus bull with predictable genetics on her.. for more than just her first calf.. something to add a little more cushion off both ends, lengthen out that hip, keep some rib & add a shot of maternal to resulting heifers. Rodman has proven himself multiple times & seems to pass on 'the look'.  Darkhorse created quite the stir, as did Style. Or you could go with the 2011 NAILE & 2012 NWSS Champion, First Impression.

-Sam

P.S. Before you knock the idea-- what's the pedigree of that one bull.. Heatwave X ANGUS?... oh yeah, Monopoly is his name.

I realize anything can happen, and it could just be a fluke, but we cut a 110# heifer out of a first calver, that was bred to Rodman.  Mama still hasn't stood.  I'm just saying these "surefire" calving ease Angus can have some trouble too.

coming from the dam.  she would have popped out a 200 pound calf from any other bull... Not to shabby if the bull reduced her BW in half?

Calving ease... Angus, Red Angus, possibly Hereford. Look for structural integrity, maternal and  something with outcross potential... JMO. Take advantage of her near perfect phenotype and add some functionality. Bull or heifer calf. You still come out a winner IMO.

What you just said had 2 be one of the dumbest things ever.... It's Called Genes!

you have apparently not been around the club calf industry much then... where two things happen-- 1: zero animals have a consistent set of genetics to allow for predictablly breeding on traits-- and 2: bulls and genetics come in the flavor of the week package...

You haven't a clue what you're talking about.  I suggest you take advice from those clearly in the know.  Being competitive in the show ring and having the consistency bred in to replicate themselves have absolutely nothing in common.

No grain, out on pasture, with just a protein and mineral supplement.  Treated the same as everyone else who calved just fine to pure Shorthorn and a couple Salers bulls.  Heifer is a Full FlushXGringo.

how was this heifer genetically different, or the same as the rest?

I have found that protein lick tubs are a terrible thing to toss out for upcoming calving first calf heifers, especially those that are about half molasis.  Some animals sit and lick all day long-- and that extra protein is enough to boost up calving dificulty and BW faster than anything else comibined.
This can work for, or against you.  I have found that in really, really poor pastures, and times of super high stress- like summer heat--- thiese are good things to have on hand...  They're also kinda ok to use during the right kind of a winter... I would NEVER use them during the spring calving time with lush, growing grass....

How did the other Angus sired calves turn out?  No mention of that-- just shorthorn and saler.  If she was the only one you mated Angus-- then that alone is a reason for her to have a problem.  Why was she the only one mated that way...

In answer to original question - I'd go Northern Improvement in a heartbeat for her first calf.  There have been plenty of top end show calves out of him and "steer-oriented" mommas.  If I dont have my wires crossed, the Champ AOB heifer this year at Houston (raised by Sullivan, showed by Elder) was a Northern Improvement out of a crossbred cow.  Ive seen it before.

For steer production in future years, purebred Charolais (steer oriented) all the way.  When it comes time, call Kris Black for a recommendation.

In regards to the discussion concerning the big calf outof an Angus bull, that happens all the time but you are judt trying to reduce risk.  No guarantees.  In that case, my money goes on the Full Throttle genetics rearing their head.  For those of you that gripe about calving difficulty of Heat Wave, I dont think he has anything on Throttle.

What does a I.W. x 485 cow have to do with the center of attention on this thread-- a heifer who's Hollywood/ Checks/ Who Made Who??

Last I checked- this thread was about a heifer who the only thing similar in pedigree to the nonsense you  just posted-- is Who Made Who-- who's at least 2 generations away from anything.

What does having a great crossed up, mutt-y mom have to do with anything?  I bet some would call Heatwave's mother great-- and she sure couldn't produce a daughter worth looking at.

If you flush a cow, and implant 200 eggs-- you're bound to get a good one, heck even a great one.  It's the law of the land and probabilities.

I tell you what- when the time comes, and this one that you keep blabbering about has a great one, either one of them-- you just go right ahead and let me know, but only on one account.  I want to see every calf out of her- every single calf--- and I bet there are 200% more average ones than great ones.

So, when's this love bird, virgin flush going to happen?  May as well do it when she's 12 months old- to get those calves on the ground quicker, and then I'd breed that heifer to the number 1 hottest steer bull in the country HEATWAVE- may as well shoot for the gold and cash in on her quicker.  She's so good, it would be crazy not to invest a couple hundred dollar stick of juice in her-- I mean, her offspring are guaranteed great ones; who'll dominate the show ring right?

Exactly what I would use, Norhtern Improvement. Seriously a good all around sire for balance on clubby genetics.

yep!! We usually go Angus or 1-80 with all of our first calf heifers!

I'm saying for more than just her first calf. If she's truly that great, she'll pass on the stoutness & look that seems to make her so great. However... I thought in order for cattle to be 'great', they had to be ultra complete, no holes & reproduce in a CONSISTENT manner.. I see a big hole myself, and that's her structure.. not only that, but you have no idea how that female will produce to certain bloodlines.. Regardless, my vote for a FLUSH is still for an Angus sire. I guess if you're willing to chance a females reproductive performance and soundness in the future, by all means, go for a virgin flush..

Don't know. Just something different rather than the same old pull toy bulls.

Thanks for the idea

"Hahaha...structure she one of the soundest animals to ever be showed in South Dakota!!! She is a franchise donor and we up here talking about hips (her hip is crazy good, pic doesnt show it, and she is pretty young in it) and angus bulls....man. Stay on task, i dont care about any angus bulls, you leave the breeding to us. You guys just sit and admire her. lol "

Really???????  Why do you ask for other suggestions then if you are going to respond like that.

I don't care how sound she herself may or may not be, you've got Checks and Who in there - that's a wreck on a front end waiting to happen.  Hence my suggestion for a Charolais (and what a lot of other very serious breeders are doing) are doing with those kinds of girls.  If you are close to Bonham ask him what to do with her.

Your not a very intelligent being are you, sir???

I can't fault you much for this comment, but asked for advice, so I am going to give you some. You can take it and use it or not.

1. IF that calf is one of the best calves ever showed in SD during your lifetime, she is only 1 of THOUSANDS of great ones shown in SD since way before you were born. No matter how good she does, she ain't all that special. You might not be old enough to know that.

2. And more importantly, I have people calling me from all over the country laughing at what a fool "Formans kid" is making of himself on steer planet. It won't be long before they are calling your dad. You may not know it, you may not even care, but you are a reflection on his business and before long they are going to start calling him instead of me asking "Why are you letting your son ruin your reputation and business spewing crap and arrogance all over the internet?" He's probably not gonna like it. You should take into consideration how your actions effects others before you commit them.

There's your advice.

Breed your heifer to a calving ease bull and hope her second calf is half as good as she is.

P.S. Before you knock the idea-- what's the pedigree of that one bull.. Heatwave X ANGUS?... oh yeah, Monopoly is his name.

OOoo, and shorthorn girl, lets she your shorthorns. LOL Sam
I'm out.

Why do you even bother asking for an opinion if you're going to laugh at it & discount it with little to no consideration? You're making excuses such as a bad picture, I evaluated the female with the photos YOU uploaded, just like anybody else was able to do before giving a serious consideration; You didn't like what I had to fault her for & what I suggested to help try & fix the hole(s) I saw while still maintaining the positives she offered. You may not care about the Angus bulls, but remember, you're not just going to end up with bulls/steers out of this female. One would think you'd be willing to throw an added shot of functionality and maternal strengths as a little extra security of cow power for any customer that would happen to purchase a female out of her & eventually utilize her in their own herd.

Allow me to apologize for giving an HONEST OPINION and consideration of what to flush the female to, next time I won't waste my time or yours.

In my opinion she may be sound now, but 5 years down the road she will break down IN MY OPINION, she's too straight in her plasters and a little straighter on her front wheels. Let the belittling commence, because no one knows as much as chucksam!
