We have a calf that is basically missing the switch, possibly got stepped on as a baby.  Is there anything we can do for that?  Can you buy a tail switch anywhere, or any miracle product that will make hair grow there?

Thanks in advance for help/suggestions.

They make false tail switches, or you can "cut and paste" tail switch hair from one calf or cow that's not being shown and glue it on another....but honestly, we don't do anything about it when it happens to us.  I've seen a calf missing most of it's tail win a class at NAILE, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I wouldn't worry about it either.  I have seen heifers who have had their ears and tail frozen off show successfully.  It will just be something that makes you mad every time you look at it.  My show heifer this year managed to split her ear on something.  I walked around and looked forever trying to find what tore her ear.  The general rule on my place is if the animal is any good at all they are more likely to do somthing to hurt themselves.  The common ones are the most resilient to injury, sickness, and being loaded into the trailer headed for the sale barn!

Not much you can do about it. Be carefull when combign around because its normally real sensitive and will start bleeding. As the calf get older the hair grows a little longer but not much. I also dont go as low when I am clipping the top of the tail.
