This is a heifer we have consigned to the Naitonal Gelbvieh Sale in Denver. She's a 3/4/08 calf. Her fit job is nothing special in the picture. When we took pictures this morning the temp was down below 20, so I wasn't going to wash her and risk getting her sick. Let me know what you think, what you would change, etc.

I would like to see her a little bit cleaner fronted, even though its normal for a gelbvieh also looks to be a tad tight in her heart girth. She looks good!!

We're less than 2 months from Denver, do you think there's still hope for a swear collar at this point? How about as far as temperature....with it starting to get cold up here, would a collar help?

2 months is plenty of time for a neck sweat to work....in the summer.......However in the winter I am not sure to tell you the truth, I would think if you would use the sweating formula from sullivans it would still work.

Aside from that high tailhead, I really like her. It looks like she's standing on a good pair of legs. I hope she does well!

It was 70 today.  We're still waiting for the cold and snow.  Maybe it'll be like the Stock Show weather a few years ago.  60's every day.  Last year it was cold and snowy.

Put Listerine (yes mouthwash ;) all of her neck, wrap it with seran(sp) wrap, and put the neck sweat on top of that. a week or 2 of that and she will look toally different.

i love seeing gelbvieh's in their original paint.  got any old semen, cowboy era?

You'd be amazed at what we have in the semen tank :) We started out in 84, so we had a lot of those older genetics when we were getting started. Not sure if you're familiar with a bull named DBC Grizzly Bear, we had him in denver back in 86 or 87. We actually sold a load of semen into Canada about 2 years ago for guys trying to get new genetics in.

With a neck sweat, shouldn't you only leave it on for 12 hours at a pop? Any potential to bleach the hair with the Listerine? I'd hate to have a red heifer with an orange or yellow neck :)

Yeah, 12 on, 12 off...you should still see a change in a week or two.  I wouldn't think there is any bleaching dangers....but don't but anything with hydrogen peroxide on her hair, you might get a blondie!

Understand the concern ;). We have used this mthod on black, red, white, etc. calves and have never had problems.

Are you taking the saran and listerine off every 12 hours, or leaving it on there consistently?

Take it off, just like the rest of the neck sweat.  I wouldn't leave anything like that on a calf for 24 hours....especially if they work the saran off and eat it. NOT GOOD.

Love the depth of body and capacity of your heifer. I bet she is thick too. I would lengthen her neck a little if I had to change something.  I hope you have a good sale.

Gonna resurrect this one and post an 'after' picture. The heifer above ended up second in class and was the high selling open heifer at the Gelbvieh sale in Denver. She framed out at an even 7.0 and weighed 1090 walking in the ring.

Congratulations!  I thinks she's a super prospect.  I think her best days are coming...in the pasture and making her new owner some $
