Who can do TH and PH testing?

How do you do the test? (Hair or Blood are what?)

How much does it generally cost?

Have you been living in a cave?? (sorry, joke)

If you have registered cattle go to the associations web page and see which labs they will accept.

If you don't have registered cattle you can use whatever lab you want

Agrigenomics takes only purple top tubes - cost is on the web site - used to be $27 but I think it is less if you do both on the same sample at the same time

Pfizer may take tail hair - go to the web site for details - they were having some sort of "holiday sale"

For those of us who forgot to have the Vet bring the purple top tubes, a tail hair sample sounds like something I might be able to do.

Is there a protocol for how to get blood for  the blood card?  GThe Vets explanation of how to get a blood sample in the purple tube sounded like more than I was willing to try.

Thanks!

Tail hair -
put cow in chute
get pliers
grap a bunch of hairs (10 or 20)
pull like heck
look to make sure you have hair bulb (ie DNA is in bulb - not hair shaft)
tape to index card or piece of paper (across shaft of hair, not bulb)
check to see how many hairs they want -if they want more than you have repeat as above
send.......await results with baited breath

Actually, I think Pfizer has licensed the tests--at least that's what the current issue of Shorthorn Country says.  You can contact them at pfizeranimalgenetics.com for details about sample submissions or to download order forms.  Dr. Beever has validated the test results.   I think Dr. Beever is still doing the tests but I'm sure they've been overloaded with all the new tests for the other breeds as well and it might be faster to go through Pfizer.

Agrigenomics (AKA Dr B) only does DNA testing on blood in purple top tubes  ;)
