If you have had Thriller calves, what kinda white/ how much did they have when bred to black cows and when bred to baldies. I read what lean beef said about how 'an animal has to have 2 copies of the spotting gene to express alot of chrome so with that little spot on his side I hope he doesnt throw white on the ribs or back. I like socks and white bellies but not crazy amounts of white.

Thanks

The calf in our avatar is a Thriller out of a purebred shorthorn.  She started out kind of red and is now blue and white.  Full sib is black and white with a lot of chrome.  Most of other Thriller's have been mainly black with an occasional touch of chrome.  Just a good bull especially to use on the dirty ones.

I doubt Thriller could be homo black-Heetseekers mother was a purebred Shorthorn-whose sire Avalanche was solid white-and who produced alot of white calves:Thriller is however-GOOD-and you can color the calves Ive seen out of him GOOD. O0

Yes, but both parents are black so he could be homo black,in all the calf reports i have not seen a red calf so i am of the assumption he is homo black,Obviosly not homo solid pattern.

You think he is heifer safe? That would kindof change my breeding plans....
Also is Lautners General Lee bull distrubuted my any major semen companys? Or do they alone sell semen on their bulls at first? My thoughts are that if Thriller is heifer safe (w/ Ali covering up the Heat wave bw) then Ill use 10 of him and 10 of General Lee and buy from who ever has General Lee. I know I had said I wouldnt breed to carriers but after some thought I will on occasion.

From the calves I have seen he is not heifer safe.  The calves are bigger most over 80 lbs and they are usually very thick.  This heifer was 85 lbs and her full sib was the same.  Really good, but Mercedes Benz may be a better option, supposed to be heifer safe and throws a lot of chrome, just not as thick.

I dont want really colorful chrome just baldies and socks so what I already have planned (breedings) Will be final I suppose. I think I attached my spread sheet of breeding plans and sires.

Hey...Just wanna throw out there that my theories on color are just that...theories. I'm not an expert on color genetics...just a student of observation, almost all of which has been with Simmental & Simmental crossbred cattle. I like to read about color genetics, and I always try to make sense of colors and markings I see. I can't say I'm positive that the genes that cause similar markings in different breeds are exactly the same genes, but I don't know they're not the same, either. Black is black, and red is red...markings may be that simple and they may not be!

My guess would be that bull would get very little white on Angus or other solid black cows that don't have a recessive spot gene. Using him on Simmental or Maines that do have white markings or carry a spotting gene, I suspect you MIGHT get a lot of chrome in some instances, but it's not going to happen every time.

That would be my educated guess, but it's just a guess.
