Would anyone consider using Thriller on a heifer since he is an Ali son.  I am not sure if I should due to the heatwave from his dam.  His birthweight is not too high though.  ????

Absolutely not. I would definitely go for it on a cow, but no way on a heifer.

Don't let anyone fool you.If you are breeding NI to Angus you will be ok but on  crosses they can be much higher and unless they are heifers, mostly throw aways. On crosses or Angus use Total Solution and you wll get low birth in the 60's and 70's and if your females are good, you will get good saleable calves, and good replacements.

We have always used Northern Improvement as calving ease sire. The heifers we are using him on are cross based. To date we have never had a "throw away". He has added hair, growth, style and some cases gain. Our birthweights have been 65 to 75#'s consistently on first calf heifers. Also had luck with SS Traveler T510 6807.
I would not use anything with Heat Wave as a calving ease sire an til they are consistently proven. There are alot of other options today for calving ease to risk the health and reproduction future of your females. I always go back over the females birthweights and then plan using bulls that should match. I have one cow that consistently throws 70-80# calves bred to variety of bulls. I took a chance bred her to Heat Wave and got a 135# concrete block that we had to jack out. The calf is alive but I am not sure I can sweat that every year.

I am with TJM on this one, NI works good on straight bred, but I have had some bigguns out of cross-breds.

Northern Improvements sire was not even close to an easy calver!

I am thinking about using Total Solution on some heifers myself.  Would he work on these clubby bred crossed heifers?  They are sired by Eye Candy, I am Legend and Dirty Hairy?

If your thinking Angus I would agree any of occ or sav Final answer or net worth have been great for us. But as they said if you breed them to a clubby heifer it still can be a big calf do to not so much the birth weight but the hips and shoulders.

Total solution is the way to go.  We use total solution on everything except habanero and who's because of his pedigree.  For these cows we like to use JPJ.  Jakes Proud Jazz is another classic calving ease sire.  Haven't had anything bigger than 75 pounds.

thanks for the imput.  think Im going to go with capiche.  He is a JPJ son.  Had a heifer out of a 4yr old cow and the BW was 60.  I was just wondering if the Ali would offset the heatwave influence in the Thriller bull.

Capiche has some BW to him from early reports too.

I would not use Networth on heifers.

On clubby heifers you better use a proven calving ease bull.  Last year i helped pull a jakes proud jazz out of a red heat wave heifer.  Wasnt a bad pull till the hips got locked.  Calf never did get up.

This year the red heifers full sister had a morgans direction heifer calf unassisted between 60 to 70 lbs.  Not only was the calf lighter but was shaped better for a first calf heifer.
