Just wondering if many people use titanium 5 in preventing pneumonia in the pasture for calves. If so did you have good luck? Any downfalls to using it? Thanks

We used to use titanium 5 on the calves. It never failed that 2 weeks after we vaccinated, they would start getting sick. I don't mean maybe he's sick maybe he's not. I mean fine today half dead tomorrow sick. We moved away from titanium and went to bovishield gold. We still get sick calves after vaccination but not near as many and nowhere near as severe. My vet and I have gone round and round arguing about this, and he swears the vaccine isn't causing it. Funny thing is, I did a test, and the calves that I only gave blackleg to didn't get sick. Only the ones that got the modified live vaccine got sick. Now I only use the modified live on the cows. Calves get cattle master with the killed virus.

TLDR: I'm not an advocate of modified live vaccines for baby calves.

We used titanium on calves, tried to do it in fair weather,  they were a little mopy for a day or two but after that never had a sick one ever.  The year before we used it, we lost several, sick in the morning and past saving by noon.

Titanium 5 should be a pretty smooth vaccine. It was developed in Des Moines I believe and the selling point when it came out was how much it was toned down from other MLVs.

I advocate only using MLVs in all cattle of all ages, except breds without a known vaccine history and one could argue high dollar pregnant seedstock cows.

The benefits of MLV vs killed has been peer reviewed and done to exhaustion.  Biggest argument for using killed would be highly stressed calves, but still i feel there are better options.

I think you might want to look at incorporating Inforce 3 into your protocol and you would pry be surprised how much that helps with pasture pneumonia.

We have switched to using the Enforce 3 a few days after birth and then again pre weaning followed up by a MLV AFTER they have been weaned a couple weeks. We also give a 7-way Blackleg in spring and again with the Enforce pre weaning  We have had to treat a lot less this way and it seems to eliminate that post vac stress period in the calves.  Enforce 3 is an awesome product!
