Hey hows it going.
Ive been lookin at this forum for a while now and hav decided to ask for a little advice.
We ahve a pedigree herd and normally break our bulls or heifers a couple of weeks before the sale we are bringing them to.
We have never shown cattle properly before, but this year we r thinking of starting with one calf.  he is 2 months old now nd is a very quite calf.
What should i do to train him properly, is leavin him tied up for hours the best way or should  i try nd walk him
Thanks for the help
(I know its a very drawn out post)

Both, go ahead and get a halter and see how it reacts.  Some calves have a better disposition than others.  If it reacts well, than start walking it and make sure you assert that you are in control.  Keep that head up.

The fact that he is gentle helps make the job much easier.  The sooner you can get a halter on him the better.  Then tie him. Walk him. Brush him. Scratch his belly with the show stick.  Talk too him.  Play some good country music.   Good luck.

what i do is put the lead all around them, pull it off, put it around their neck, then let it slack.  there is no doubt the first time they feel it and know it's on there they will react, but getting them to let you put it on early and often is a good thing.

probably the biggest problem you will have is it becoming a pet and it invading YOUR space.

What we do for training a calf for a show or sale is put the halter on them let them drag it for about 3-4 weeks and then start tieing them up after that we lead them in a small pen but big enough to lead the calf in. Brush, Pet, Wash the calf. Play some good country music. Good Luck.

If you let the halter drag, they'll be really hard to break to lead.
