Standard question of: steer will walk fine then decide to run to other side of arena.  What to do to break him of this.  She ties him up, feeds them then walks them he walks good sometimes then runs to night pen.  Should we change up routine walk first?  When he goes to far pen we yank his head around and make it unpleasant until he lets us be at his head again.  He is still dragging rope cause she cant catch him up yet.  Pretty experienced show girl totally frustrated at this point.

Yoke him to the biggest old halter broke cow you have, give him every chance to run, when he figures out he can't, he'll quit. Tie the halter to a collar or tie it to a second halter on your broke cow, just don't get tangled up in the rope

Put a ring in his nose. Itll make her experince with him lots easier. He will respect her and do about any leading she wants him to do

Our county fair does not allow nose rings, California, someone might think we were being cruel. I would tie him him and tight every time he acts up and put him on melatonin. Start with 100 mg and go up from there if needed. Every time he starts to get rambunctious and wants to get his head down, tie him with his head up high and tight. The nearest rail, post or tree, wait 20 to 30 minutes and then try again. If he acts up do it again.

I did this with a heifer calf that did the exact same thing as your steer and after about 3 times I could lead her with no issues! Good luck!

Is he just being stubborn and not wanting to walk on the lead very well? I would agree with tieing him up to an ollder cow with manners, but if your really having problems, I would either buy or borrow a full sized donkey to tie up to your steer. I used this method with both heifers and steers and in no time at all, they all led around the ring with no problem and had a better attitude.
Good luck !

Permanent nose ring could be a last resort if you cannot earnestly break him of the habit. We put a ring in my daughter's calf two years ago because as soon as you walked in the ring he would put his head down and just rub it in the sand.  It happened only in arenas at prospect shows never at home. After we exhausted all means possible to break him of the habit, we  put a ring in his nose. He never did it with me just anyone else who lead him.
