I hope all the Planeteers have read through this thread and posts.  If they have, everyone should know why there are soooo many Train Wrecks produced by people who have no idea how to feed a Show Calf.

#1) If you don't know what you are feeding your calf----------Jeezzzz
#2) If you don't know how much you feed (POUNDS), how do you expect to know what & when you might need to change

x3, from the truth... ;)

Just for arguementitive sake...  We've always had a theory that any 'well calculated' feed 'ration', in a 5 gallon bucket will weigh between 20 and 30 pounds-- has anyone else noticed that.  More specifically, any high percentage corn ration, will be more like 25-30 lbs, again in a 5 gallon bucket..

of course, it greatly varies with your feed ingrediants- like cottonseed  and beet pulp, which may only weigh a pound to the gallon, or SB meal which may weigh 40 lb to a 5 gallon bucket full.  Take a 5 gallon bucket of salt, and you might have 60 lbs...If you've got liquid molasis, or some kind of texturized feed, then that'll make a difference...

Maybe this is just what we've noticed, but it seems that no matter what we put in, and formulate-- we cannot get our feeding outside that weigh window...

I think something alone these lines is worthy of becoming a 'sticky' topic to remain atop this forum page-- JASON???? (argue)  any followers or nay voters?

We fed with the 3 pound coffee can but we weighed it on a postal scale to get an accurate weight. 3/4 cans of hog pellets weighed 3 pounds, a full, rounded at the top, can of Purina's Finishing Touch weighed 3 pounds, beet pulp weighed 2  1/4 pounds (Dry).

Once you know what a scoop weighs you can use it to feed with. If you d o not have a scale fill a plastic bag with a scoop of your feed and either take it to the local grocery store or feed store and weigh it on their scale.

As stated, if you do not know the amount you are feeding it is very hard to adjust your feed. it is very difficult to figure the conversion rate on your animal with out all the right information.
