Hey y'all! I have some Uno Mas sexed heifer semen that I was wondering about using in my herd this fall! What are your Uno females growing/looking like? Do they make good replacements? Any suggestions as to what kind of cow he works best on? Any info is appreciated!

Also, what are your Lock Down, Wide Range and United calves looking like?

Thanks in advance!  ;D

We have one coming in a few weeks out of a short chunky THC cow.  Am really excited as it should be a pretty good mating.  Also have one coming in April out of a really nice Maternal Perfection x WDM, that'll be 50 % simmi and 7.25 % Chi. I have not seen a bad Uno Mas calf yet, kind of like pizza some better than others, but none are bad. I can tell from your post that you are a Select Sires customer.  A friend has some 3/4 Wide Range heifers and they are really good, big bellied, sound and attractive.  Really liking Uno Mas' maternal sib Revolution, an Upgrade out of Uno Mas' dam a Shawnee Goldmine daughter and they are offering sexed on him as well, just not a heifer bull like Uno Mas, but $50 for sexed.

The few I've seen have been really stylish, sound,  and growth to them. Only fault is they can have some attitude problems.

Thanks for the reply, CRS! Sounds like you've got a few good matings on the way! I'm typically a Cattle Visions customer since they seem to have a little bit of everything! (lol) But I'm not opposed to Select or any other company though, it's usually just whoever has what I'm interested in! I'm glad to hear about the Range heifers, I'm a fan of big-bellied cattle and I bought a bunch of Range semen before his CE number dropped. Oh well! Any other info on Revolution? I was looking at him too but hadn't heard much about him yet. I'd be interested to hear a comparison of Uno and Revolution calves. Thanks again for your reply!  (thumbsup)

Hi Gargan! Thank you for your reply!  (thumbsup)

I'm glad to hear about the growth aspect since his numbers are a bit lower than average! Were the ones you saw deep bodied?  ;D

Simmgal,  I know that the Wide Range CE number has dropped, but the people we have known to use them say they are a little bigger, but built right and they have had no trouble out of him even on first calf heifers.  We have a really good Maine cow we were wanting a heifer out of so we are probably going to give Revolution a shot.  Have not heard anything on him yet, our Select Sires rep had recommended him.  Said he is a really impressive beast, but will probably have bigger calves.

I wouldn't say they were belly draggers but had plenty of middle and depth for my liking.  (thumbsup)

We have several over here, they are OK. They don't have a lot of grow on them, and none will make it to our show pen, but will be nice breeding pieces. Amazingly, two of them have white faces (out of dams with white on the face). They have attitude also, they take a little more work to get them tamed down. Not mean, just not easy to work with. They like to fight you all the way.
We have a really nice Lock Down bull calf, out of a first calf heifer,Upgrade. Nice blaze face on him.

Our favorite calves this fall have been the HPF Optimizer, ACW Iron Hide, and Hooks Broadway calves. Love all of them! We have several Live Ammo calves due in the spring, pretty excited about those too. I do not think I have seen any yet, he is a young bull.
I plan on trying Elevate on some heifers this fall (next week, when they come in). On heifers that are Dream On influenced, and our good HPF Optimizer heifer calf our son showed this year.

Hello EVERYONE. It has been a while, this ole Cowboy just has been off his game a lot since last years accident. It has taken a long time, but am feeling lots better these days.

Uno Mas -- well, what can I say here. The last couple of years, I took the plunge and bought about 10 head of hfrs and cows from the Shannon Welsh production sale over in Illinois. All but a couple of the hfrs were bred to Uno Mas. Mine came small, 70-75 lbs ave. Up and going in minutes, and GROW like crazy. They tend to follow the cow's build for the most part, but make em just a tick better. Mine have all been so gentle by the time they are a month old, they follow you around like pet dogs. They can come with a redish tint to them, but shed off dark black. I have not gotten a single one with white other than a small splash around their udders.

Last year, I let all 3 of them go back to the breeder as agreed, and I have been sorry ever since. This year, we had 9 hfrs out of 10 breedings , and 6 are Uno Mas. I weaned in early Sept, and now, they are like a bunch of house pets. Come when called, love being combed right in the feed pen, and are big for their age. I just love em. I didn't sell a single calf this year mainly due to the market -- BUT, there are several out there that REALLY need a little girl to lead them around. Course, I did buy really nice hfrs and cows, but these are perfect. Hope that helps, you will NOT be sorry using him on hfrs, from first grunt to licking them off was about 30 minutes. I had to be there a few times to make sure the placenta broke, that is how easy they came.

Happy Thanksgiving every one, I miss you all. Any one need a cow herd manager?? I think we are about to be asked to leave this nice ranch after 12 years, it is a long story.

Thanks for your reply, Firesweep! How are the Optimizer and Ironhide bull calves looking? Are they better heifer makers or bull makers? I've been wondering about sampling Optimizer and Ironhide next year but I haven't been able to see many calves yet! I haven't heard anything but good things so I might just try them both anyway! How are Optimizer, Ironhide and Broadway for throwing depth in their calves? If you have pictures that would be great too! You can PM me if you prefer! Thanks again!  (thumbsup)

Thank you for the insight, Cowboy! Nice to hear from you again! I appreciate it! Have you calved any Uno heifers/cows out yet? How's their depth of body looking and do they milk?  ;D  :) 8)

First ones I raised last year I let go back to the breeder of the cows. Bummer -- His 3rd production sale is with Dwyers on 12-4, the lots 33 and 34 hfrs are two of those I let him get back. He called them 1/2 bloods, but are both 3/4. Go look at the videos of his sale -- Welsh Cattle Company is listed on Dwyers website. The ones I kept this year are all HAIRY and DEEP bodied for young hfrs. I wish I had done this 10 years ago, I truly do. Best cows I have ever owned. I know it is my opinion here, but you just can't go wrong using him on hfrs, you will not be sorry.

Cheers -- Terry

We have one iron hide bull and two heifers. EACH ONE of them are super good. He throws lots of hip, they have plenty of rib, and all three were out of different type cows. The two heifers will be in the show string for sure, and of the three so far, two have had nice white faces.
Optimizer we have some of both, and again, both are super (bulls and heifers). Powerful, great docility, and just plain good. I have heard Optimizer will throw white, but we have not had any excess white yet.
We have just had two Broadway calves, both good. Both came small. One we had to put down because he was paralyzed, we are still working with the state vet to figure out why. We have several more due in the spring.
Here are some pictures...
The first pic is two bull calves; the bigger on the left is an Iron Hide and the smaller one is a Broadway. About 3 weeks difference in age. The Broadway was out of a first calf heifer, and 48 pounds at birth, so he is smaller for that reason. Both fantastic bull calves.
Second pic is the same Iron Hide calf, at a few weeks old. STUD!
3rd picture is a 60 day old Iron Hide heifer calf, out of a Shear Force cow. She is my daughter's show heifer for next year, we like her a lot so far.
4th pic is our oldest Optimizer. Super happy with her, and look forward to her next year showing as a senior yearling
last picture is a June Optimizer, now over 600 pounds with no creep and still on the cow. He is pretty good himself.

This is the heifer out of our Boardwalk x Ali THC cow.  She came small and has taken off.  Really like the way she is coming together.  First pic is from day one and the 2nd is at day 21.  All mom and no creep.  She was 65 lbs at birth.  Really like her and she will  probably be sticking around since she is 50 % Simmi and high Chi.  Still expecting one more in April.  Already ordered more semen for this year.

I'll be really curious to hear about your Live Ammo calves! Have you had a chance to see any calves? I'm really considering using him. I found another Lock son that reminds me of Ironhide-

Our first one is due next month, so I have not seen any yet. I am excited to see how he does here.

I have heard of the bull you linked above, and like the cow family for sure. He looks a lot like Iron Hide in his picture. I have seen Iron Hide in person, and he is even deeper than his picture shows. So far, everything here has great depth out of him also. He has a decent set of EPD's too. There are a lot of Lock N Load bulls out there now, so some good selection options.

Had another Uno Mas calf Wednesday. This heifer is a May, so 20 months old. We had her bred early because we did not want to deal with breeding during show season. We had her pelvis checked by the vet to make sure she was OK to breed a little young. She has some clubby in her (WHW is her maternal grandsire).
We ended up pulling him, but only because we found the heifer in the morning pushing, and I saw no progress in 30 minutes. Not knowing how long she had been pushing for, I decided to jump in and help since she was a young heifer. She could have had the calf on her own, but I did not want to take any chances. Calf was 73 pounds, 285 days gestation. We will see how he grows....
