Uno Mas Question
« on: August 29, 2017, 01:35:36 PM »
Anyone have any luck breeding to him with the sexed semen? I know there is decreased conception, but am I looking at 50% at best? $50 a straw sounds reasonable

I used 1 straw this past spring on a big i67 that did a lot of winning.  I even dropped the straw before loading, picked back up and she stuck, no pasture exposure.

We've used it and got the same conception rate as conventional, but from what I have gathered in talking to most guys who have used conventional semen out of him there have been very few bull calves born.  Sexed through Select Sires is also 4 mil and only $50.
Life is tuff, but it is tougher when you are stupid.

If sexed is 4 mil, what is a typical normal dose on any conventional?

Usually 2 to 3 mil, some is 5, but is usually a lot more expensive.

So $50 is a pretty good deal for it?

I think so. Also like their Angus bull Conversation. Have our Who da Man donor stuck to him using their sexed semen. It is also $50

I like the idea of Uno Mas so I could possibly register the heifers

I had Select Sires do everything and ended up with 50% conception with sexed semen on heifers. With conventional we usually get 70+% on natural heat detection if using high quality semen. It seems if we time breed 60% seems to be the number.Condition of cows also makes a difference plus number of days since calving as anything much less than 60days is marginal to get them moved up.

$50 is definitely pretty reasonable from what I've seen. We used 3 straws this spring and 2 stuck. We like the idea of getting heifer calves that can be 1/2 Simmental no matter what kind of cow or heifer.

I think I paid $50-75 for my sexed heifer semen, had 2/2 stick on the first breeding last fall. Really impressed with the calves so far, plenty of dimension and depth and didn't touch a single one on the way out. I know that's a small sample size, but I have 4 or so I'll be breeding to him this fall if everything pans out. $50 sounds reasonable to me for sexed semen.
Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy cattle and that's pretty much the same thing as far as I'm concerned!

Simmental and SimAngus bulls available year-round!
