Currently my kids have four show calves, two heifers and two steers.  Our young heifer that was born 9/24/11 was sired by "I Am Legend".  She is real impressive and could compete at the national level.  Since my kids are 9 and 11, they are not ready for that level of competition.  I am strongly considering selling her so she can go and compete at the big shows.  Would like some advice on what type of information I should include in my ad if I decide to sell her.  I know the obvious things (pictures from front, side and rear, video) that need to be posted.    I also thought about including pics of her sire and dam as well. Another thing I am thinking about doing is waiting until she shows for the first time at the Oklahoma State Fair and Tulsa State Fair, so I could include the results in the ad.  Do you think I should add anything else to the ad, am I adding too much and should I wait to put her up for sale until she shows?

Well some of you asked for pictures of the calf that I am thinking about selling.  I took some pictures the past couple of days of the heifer. None of them have been photo shopped and I am not a professional photographer (probably can tell by just looking at the pics.  The calf hasn't been clipped either, trying to make sure she has hair for the upcoming shows starting in September.

Here is my thinking, its a gamble waiting for one to show to put her up for sale.  If she goes in there and kicks tail at those shows, then yes there will be a lot of interest in her.  But if she is just middle of the road, then there wont be as much interest cause she will be older and people want her as a show prospect then they are gonna want her younger.  I guess it depends on how good you think she is and what you want for her.  I know we typically tryto buy ours fairly young, but will buy an older one if she is right.  If she is a September, then you are getting real close to her being a yearling.  You wait to long and she is no longer really a show prospect, she is more just a breeding piece.  So it all really depends on how you want to market her.
I would say if you want to sell her, go ahead and get an ad together and get her out there.  I would put all the pics you have mentioned of her, and pics and pedigree of her mother.  I wouldnt worry to much about the sire pics and pedigree since his is easy enough to find on the internet.  I would also include if the heifer is papered or not.  I know a lot of places people dont worry because of the commercial heifer shows, but here in TX we dont have that so we have to have papers of some sort to show.
If you do decide to go ahead and offer her now shoot me some pics and a price!!!!!

I wasn't trying to tease you all about my sons heifer.  Just wanted to get some honest advice before I posted the ad.  I will go ahead and put her up for sale now instead of waiting until after the fall state shows in Oklahoma.  The wording for the ad is almost finished, need to take some new pictures since the ones I have are a few months old.  I will also look into sending pics to Lautners blog.  The more places I post her pics the better.

As a graphic designer, I think more people miss in terms of ad design than regarding the information they include. I think most of that is fairly easy to figure out, and anything that you might not mention can be covered in a phone call or an email. What a lot people under think is the ad design...if you don't GET a phone call or an email, it doesn't matter what you say about her! You have to catch the attention of a potential buyer, intrigue him or her enough to follow up by making contact, and create a positive enough image about not only the heifer, but the program that produced her, to justify whatever money you expect to get.

I agree with the earlier post...if you wait until she shows and she gets beat, then you may have missed a good opportunity. That's not to say she isn't an exceptional female, but we don't all see em the same, and you never know how a judge might line em up on any given day.

Unless you just want to sell her, I don't see anything wrong with your kids dragging around a pretty good one early on. It sets a precedent that can be hard to beat sometimes, but it also gives them a chance to win, to feel good about what they're doing, and to get hooked on showing. Just something to think about...
