Dear friends. A friend mine is looking for some additional info regarding Wagyu female crosses, in special with Angus and Brangus breeds.
I search on internet and always found the benefits of Wagyu meat, OK, lots of informations. But nothing about how crossed females works. I wish know more details about fertility rates, age forbirth, food needs for become fat (more grain, more grass), age for puberty, mothering ability, milking ability, etc...
If someone have information about it and can share with me, will appreciate much.
Thank you.

All I can tell you is that one of our former neighbors used to have like 100 head of wagyu and his goal was to get to calves that were around 7/8 angus 1/8 wagyu to 31/32 Ang 1/32 Wagyu because they sold calves on the rail and wanted to add a little boost to his rate of primes. Anyhow we raised one PB Wagyu steer with an Angus steer and the angus grew 2x faster it seemed and the wagyu was extremely picky about grain.. he would actually pick out parts of the feed and leave a whole trough full of the rest, When the angus steer went to slaughter because he was done so much sooner the wagyu seemed to go through almost some type of depression and just began to mope around the lot and refused to eat or drink untill he went down and eventually died despite our efforts.. anyhow in talking with our neighbor there were definitely idiosyncrasies with all of his PB wagyu cattle like he couldn't drive them to move them from pen to pen they would just scatter and look at you stupid.. you had to let them follow you. And the whole picky eating thing was told to me to be common and he said that they finally went to a pelleted feed in their feedlot to solve the problem. I know that the crossed calves were better about all of these things, and the less wagyu the more "normal" they seemed to be.

I can't speak for the whole breed just my experiences with them... hope that helps

Thank you for your comments. Understood that this was your experience and will not extend this behaviour for all breed. Was a very good discussion. Thanks you.

Here is a link were Waygu were discussed I think my clients may be able to help you with grass fed Waygu. http://www.steerplanet.com/bb/the-big-show/close-but-not-close-enough/15/ PM me if you think I can help.

Thanks Aussie. Gppd topic. More or less same informations that I read on some sites. Basically the differences are on type lines and for get a balanced animal you must cross the lines. Personally I think that a good Shorthorn or Angus well food managed can get similar marbling with a good taste and tenderness. Wtihout lose meat conformation on back, as Wagyu are very bad backies!
Here in Brazil Wagyu is just now appearing and is like the "new princess on castle party" many people are looking him with excessive good eyes. Some times the day after party show us an ugly witch and not a princess!
Thank you for comments.

I've heard the exact same type of behavior as mccanfarms has explained.  I've heard they're incredibly hard to work, feed, calve, and care for in general.

From some reading, the only breed that marbles as well is Jersey. You're not going to get that level of marbling with anything that shows much muscle expression.  "There's that quantity / quality pendulum again.  I don't see the breed being high maintenance. But I could be wrong. With the popularity of the breed, many people are getting rejects and judging the breed as a whole by it.

I realize this is anecdotal, but the folks that have told me about the wagyu manage some of the most expensive and sought after cows in the breed. They have been very adamant about these cattle not having "normal" instincts or behavior.

the best sources for information is the AWA - American Wagyu Association wagyu.org. I am also in contact with Pete Eshelman of the Joseph Decuis farm and restaurant. josephdecuis.com  Pete may be willing to discuss this. There are also companies that deal in Wagyu genetics. I do not have their info with me, but you could search for it and find it pretty fast is my guess.
