Red's new skin issue topic has got me to thinking..   How many of you vaccinate for warts?   Is the vaccine worth it?  How many have ever had a wart problem?

we vaccinated one time & the heifer developed more warts than before. My understanding is that there are different strains or viruses. You need to send in an actual wart & have them use that for the vaccine.
I've had very little trouble w/ warts. Only had them really bad when we bought a heifer from out of state.
I hope the thread was of some help to you.

Kanshow, I have worked for a veterinary clinic for the past couple years and we seldomly vaccinated for warts. It is a virus that goes through them as a calf and we did give a select few show calves shots, but most feel it is not very effective. The main issue preventing people from vaccinating on a larger scale is cost. The vaccine is very costly. Most of the time we just cut the warts off, since most shows require the animals to be free of visible warts.

I've seen some bad wart cases in some of the feedlot cattle and sure didn't want to get it started with the show calves...  They are a half mile apart but one never knows.    A bigger battle we've fought in the past has been ringworm.

My vet told me to pinch the wart off and put it in their feed so they build of immunity to it.  Which would make sense but I never could tell if was joking or not.  I am sure he was but, it does make sense.  So they will have that strain in their system.

I had a large problem with warts on a steer 2 years ago. He literally had hundreds and they were everywhere. We gave him the wart vaccine and the warts got even worse so needless to say I am not convinced that it works. We ended up cutting off the large ones and feeding them to him and the rest of the warts finallt decided to go away.

vaccines are design to prevent, not treat warts.  As previously posted, cutting off the warts and feeding them back to the animal creates self immunity.  For the most part, if the warts are bad, cut em off. If they are small and can hardly be seen, don't mess with them,  the cattle hate it.

i used to vaccinate all the time for them amd never had them...then it got kind of expensive...so i dont do it anymore....

if i were to have a problem with them i would cut them off, feed them to the animal and then put used motor oil over the area that was infected to help dry it up....

We had a group of heifers that probably half of them (25 or more) got horrible warts about two years ago.  We asked our vet what to do (including specifically the vaccine) and he said leave them alone.  They would eventually dry up and fall off.  And they did.  Probably took about 4 months.
