I heard a judge tear a heifer apart when she came in her first class and actually said that he didn't like her, but he may have to eat his words later. Her did because he gave her supreme overall later.
What's the weirdest thing you've heard a judge say?

Down Oklahoma way, a cetain judge said this about a steer "I don't care if he was pink, purple or tie dyed... He is a great one." He might also be the one that says "rockstar" a bit. I also wonder when a single calf became cattle, as in "this is a good cattle.." Grammer police at your service. (thumbsup)

With so many to pick from here are a few. Have heard a brahman breeder that judges tell people their heifer didn't win because her feet were trimmed like a steer's. Called a kid ol' big ugly in showmanship. He also told a girl if she would have adjusted her show halter ( it was too low on the nose) during the class she would have won showmanship. Heard a different judge at NAILE a few years ago say he was so nervous he thought he was gonna pee himself. I've seen many of them say a steer wasn't fat enough yet never laid a hand on him.

When I was a kid the infamous Joe Lewis was judging our state show and used a brown swiss marked steer to win a class and said he was as smooth as a school Marms leg. It got quite a chuckle from the crowd.
Imagine a judge selecting Grand steer with both the champions and res in the ring at the same time. As he starts talking he says I made a mistake. the best steer is the Res Champion cross. He will be Grand tonight. Seen it happen! Show management nightmare!

Judge says, "The heifer in third is the performance cow of the bunch. But just didn't have enough hair to win." Uh, it was 101 degrees in August, in KS, with a black haired heifer.
An older and massive young man has a 5 month heifer weighing about 550 pounds. Was it's first show and didn't want to walk. Actually the young man dragged the pour thing around the ring digging a furrow in the chips all the way around. Judge commented he liked her "freedom" of movement.

The weirdest I ever heard was, "If I owned this heifer, I would add length to her neck" (clapping)
One of my favorites happened a few years at the KJLS so maybe a few other KS people might remember this as well. A younger boy had a calf that should have stood toward the bottom of the class. The calf got away from the kid a few times and stepped on him. The kid was shook up but stayed in the ring. When the judge lined up the calves he put the steer in the middle of the class where the good steers stopped and the bad ones started. When the judge got to the boys steer he said he placed him a few higher then he probally should have been, but if he ran into the boy in the future he wanted someone that tough to remember him as a friend. It is the only time I have heard a judge not mention the animal in his placing.
"I’m placing this cow calf pair first because its the funniest class I have ever judged, and this is what its about, good kids, good cattle, and a laughing audience" He could not stop laughing threw the comment because the 6 day (yes day) old calf was bouncing around like a nut, at our regional show.

Weirdest one for me was about 5 or 6 years ago at a little podunk county fair. Funny stuff happened both days. I had a March heifer, and Leemon's had a heifer in my class. Their heifer had won its class at Jr. Nationals and all that, so I didn't plan on winning. I get in the class Jr. Show day and I figure I had 2nd place to Leemons. I ended up getting dead last, with some pretty sorry heifers beating me. The judge told me that my heifer was too fat to ever breed and would never make a cow. He told me I should think about eating her (not kidding a bit). To say the least, I was a little upset. I was kinda proud of the heifer, and while she had some condition, she wasn't overly fat, and she was even bred! Next day, I got in the class and got 2nd....but it was ahead of Leemons...we were both confused, but oh well.
Anyhow, two years later, I show my heifer's first calf under the same judge. We won our class, and the judge was talkin my steer up somethin fierce. Going back in for champion, he was talkin all the calves up, and ended up using mine (lightweight steer)..I was a little surprised, but also very happy.

The breeder of my cow did that very thing....the judge didn't know what to say.... I didn't put the breeder up to it, but he knows that certain judge pretty well and wasn't mean about it, just kinda pointed it out.
BTW, the heifer that "wouldn't ever breed", has gone on to be the lead donor on our farm..that's right, I was told my beloved Sonny wouldn't ever make a cow. Guess the judge was wrong this time!

Last year I took a angus heifer into the ring agionst 5 girls, and the judge told me I didn't have a chance, just to give up.

There was a judge at the Iowa State Fair feeder calf show a couple of years back that never really gave any reasons for his placings other than in every class he'd say " I placed this animal first because I liked him better than the one I put in second." I'm not kidding--he said that in almost every class and I don't believe I ever heard him mention anything about frame, soundness, performance, etc. He did a pretty respectable job of placing the calves---he just couldn't give a set of reasons!! He sure had everyone scratching their heads, though!!

A judge said this about one of my heifers:: "The heifer in 3rd is by far the most powerful and soundest moving heifer in the class and soundness is usually what I look for. She is long necked and beautiful fronted, but I can't use her because her face is too frail and she won't make it out on pasture"
We took a heifer to jr. nationals one year because it was the only calf one of our sons had to show. The other son had a barn burner that hadn't been beat so we weren't about to stay home. We loaded those two girls up and headed for the show. After watching a few classes, we were kinda chuckling to ourselves that maybe the sorry heifer might have a chance. The judge was from Ill. and the Ill kids were kicking butt and taking names. Most of the heifers were the tall really hard doing kind of by-gone days, kinda like the heifer we didn't really want anyone to see in our stall. Sure enough, she wins her class... goes in to show for division... division champ!! Seems she had a really nice vulva. I know my mouth dropped open, and still does when I think about it. You just never know what the judge will be smokin' on any given day. lol

When i was still showin in 4-H i had a pretty good steer at our county fair. Thought I had a shot at winnin my class, ended up placin 4th because my steer was "Too wide in the back"?????? I've never heard of a steer bein too stout!
