We wean all of our February-April calves by the 15th of July as a group. Not everyone has the luxury of day weaning but if you can make it work it is the best way to transition them at weaning. We day wean for about two weeks. Then we just let the cows in with the calves to suck once at night and kick them right back out in the pasture for about a week. After that we just leave the gate closed. The cows are seperated by a fence where the calves cant get through and within 24 hours the cows usually go back out to pasture and never come back. The calves never skip a beat and really take off eating.  It is also nice to have your calves eating creep feed readily well before weaning time. We are all about "less stress" and it has really worked for us.

I have heard fence line weaning is the way to go...

Only if it is a really good fence, otherwise your chasing them and making everything more stressful.

We wean about 6-7 months.

We started to use the nose pieces 3 years ago. I will never use anything else, stress free.
