I know most people say you cant breed clubby bulls to angus cows and get anything... remind you first Monopoly is out of an angus cow so lets cut the crap. Im just curious if anyone has had any luck on angus cows with any clubby bulls? The guy I work for is nice enough to let me run cows for free as long as they are angus and they come from him. So a lot of my options are limited on why I don't get different cows. Any opinions to help are appreciated!

Purebred Angus females have worked very well with the following club calf sires for us.

Eye Candy, Highliner, Monopoly, Ohio Senator, Unstoppable, Walks Alone, and Who Made Who. This is just our experience.

We are trying Believe in Me, Monopoly Money, and Walk This Way this year on purebred females.

I cant be the only one whose first thought is this is an ideal situation for using a char crossed bull. There are MANY options out there for making smokes if that would work for you or your market. Not only that but the calves that dont make the cut will convert cheap corn to expensive beef rapidly! Just my two cents.

not trying to re create anything.... just trying to make some extra $ to support whats going to be (having twins on top of the 1yr old we have) a house full of boys. Just trying to cut some corners and not spend 5 years figuring out what others already know. Arent we all friends until we hit the showring? that's how I was raised. What about Simmi bulls for 1st calf Angus heifers? Any ideas?

Hopefully some half bloods to breed clubby.... Im hoping in a few years he will let me run something different or I find some land. I know out of a first calf heifer having a live healthy calf  is the goal.... but if I could take it in the right step for a maternal calf... that would be ideal

Simmental wise I would recommend for these heifers.  All these are available form select sires.

WLE Uno Mas X549 -  probably the most showy prospect

RCR STETSON T17 -  come small and grow like a weed, smaller framed.

TNT JUMP START R238 - come small and grow like a weed lot of natural thickness.

Im sure im about to open myself up for a lot of bashing.... so feel free... but if all these bulls are so great that they will add power hair and bone in a sound package.... why cant you breed them to a good functional angus cow and get a great calf? I know all the factors of matching and breeding cattle. But it seems to me that if you cant breed these crossed the wall and back bulls to a good angus cow.... maybe hes not really that great. Personally I think everyone has this club calf deal so bent... I love hair as much as the next... but what happened to length of body? The point between hip and shoulder.

The bulls I mentioned are not traditional clubby bulls but just good Simmental bulls that are heifer safe and provide good growth.  I have seen a few Uno Mas calves shown that worked both as functional and clubby.

If you want steers go with Heatwave or Walks Alone. Best shot at getting a great one, and just a good a shot at getting OK calves. But since you have heifers I would not take that route until after they had the second calf.
For heifers I would go with a pure Main or Sim, several have been mentioned.
There are really no bulls out there that can guaranty a great one, pure bred or clubby, go with the favorites and cross your fingers.

If it were me and I had good Angus heifers I would breed for heifers, at least from their first 2 calves, either show or replacements with Main or Sim bulls, on average you will have an easier time selling and get a more consistent product you can move. You have had some good suggestions for Sim I would look at I-80 or some of the other Ali sons for Main bulls to use on your heifers, some have had good luck With Majors Money Man as well.

Find a direction you want to go and then make your choices, shooting for a great steer out of a heifer is probably not the direction I would go.

Ive got about 5 directions I want to go and cant decide on 1! Ive got everything from heifers to a 9 yr old cow... but im pretty sure shes open this year. Everyone always talks about using embryos... which is a great idea if I had the money to do so and an awesome clean up bull. Thanks for the info!
