Just sitting here thinking about my new calves, and waiting for a heifer to calve, or help her calve, bored I guess, so I got online...

My question is what clubby sires should I use this next Spring/Summer breeding?  I prefer proven AI Bulls not the new one at Denver this year.  Just too many of the "NEW ONES" are gone by next year.

Monopoly is out for me, too expensive for me to breed a group of cows IMO, will only use for flushing.  Same for Heat Wave.  Also, there is getting too many of them around.  Time for me to move on.  Maybe use a son of Heat Wave.

Please tell me your thoughts or recommendations for A.I. Club Calf Sires to use that you have used in the past and have had consistent or proven good results with.  Mayber some even being born now.  Sunseeker, My Turn, Headliner, Smooth Sailing, Red Hot, WMW Son, Hired Man, Carnac, Dr. Who, Dirty Hairy, Naughty Pine, Immortal, Point Taken, Hairy Bear, Friction, or ?

Also, what about this years calves out of...Walks Alone, Ivy League, or Bojo?

Hopefully, this will just be something to post about.  Please, not about price of semen or politics of certain bulls or their owners.  Let's have a nice chat!

Time to go check my heifer!

Thanks,

That Heat Wave deal I was just thinking about ,there sound like a good chance of calving problems ,could have a cripple ,an no one really wants the heifers to much ...That takes quite a bit out of those high dollar steers, might work for some people , but might not also..

I'd be more interested in what you are using them on.
Dr.Who-smaller framed whiskey genetics
WMW-larger whiskey genetics
Gigalo Joe, Invincible, Jimmy the Greek, sunseeker, heat seeker, all on whiskey genetics.
And some naughty pine on a total play cow.
Still debating on what to put in a couple manchild cows they are due to joe this March

I'm getting to be a fan of Jimmy the Greek...  I've experienced, and heard great things about him...

If I can ever get my hands on a some good Herfs- I'm going stick them to Carpe- heard much success this way!

If Monopoly semen wasn't so much I would use him alot but I'll still probably use him on a couple cows. Aside from him, Smooth Sailing, Point Taken, Smilin Bob, Carnac and Walks Alone.

Let me do some self promoting on our bull named Peer Pressure.  His first calves are on the ground now.  He is looking to be a calving ease sire with the baldy look.  Most of his calves have had some white on their face, with many of them out of hiefers.  Peer Pressure is a Dr Who son.  We will be having an Ohio Beef Expo deal in a few weeks.  We hope to see many fellow SteerPlant members there!

Doesn't he carry some BW? (2.4) His sire is Gambles Hot Rod? (4.6)
Do you think that is a good choice for a heifer? Just a thought. BW's scare me a bit for heifers.

yeah, i only have a handful of heifers to use him on, most are purbred, low BW simmis, and a half blood, that i think can handle an angus bull with a little birth weight, Style actually BW was 79# and El Capitan was 85#, they ratioed nice too, but who knows, he is unproven and i know it is a chance to take but worth a shot on a few heifers that i think can handle a 90# calf if they had to. the 2.4 BW  is a number that is some grey area for me, i would like it better if it was 1.0 but happy it isn't 3.5  :-\
most of my other heifers are being bred to Magnitude (PB angus), In Dew Time (PB simmi) and GCF Amigo (PB simmi)

i also got a reall good Heatwave X simmi cow that has done really nice work w/ steers and heifers when bred simmi that i am going to breed to to Style too. a variety of cows are going to get bred too

What is the breeding on Peer Pressure?  Is this year his first calf crop?

Peer Pressure is a Dr Who son out of a Meyer granddaughter.  This is his first calf crop.

We have just started getting reports on Ivy League calves things are looking really good so far.  Birthweights have been moderate, not heifer moderate, but plenty moderate for how he is made.  If anyone has any other reports we would love to hear them.  We will start calving to him the second and third week of March.  We didnt AI we just turned him in after he got home from the bull stud.

We will be using One and Only, a nicely made, clean Heat Wave son;  Detour, a Friction x Strictly Business x Draft Pick son, that is also clean, and Yellow Jacket.

We've got 10 WMW, 2 Monopoly, 4 Ali, and 1 Manchild this year.  We are pleased with all of them this year.  In Canada, we are limited on what semen we can buy, not too many are cleared for Canada.

We are breeding to Gigolo Joe (he is replacing Ali as my easy calver), WMW, Monopoly, Eye Candy (like what I've seen elsewhere), Alias (same as EC), and we're trying Highliner.

I don't like using unproven bulls either so we try to limit it to one per year.
