How does one go from 10.1 calving ease to -1.1? He was my pick for a heifer I have here, now I'm worried. Does anyone know what happened or has anyone had any trouble with him?

EXACT same thing happened to CCR Wide Range who I bred some heifers to last spring. Fall 16 EPDs came out and he went from 11 or higher down to around a 3.3 for calving ease (which was WAY more than the possible change factor) but kept a (-) BW EPD. Seemed fishy but I didn't use him anymore. I noticed as soon as the Spring 2017 EPDs came out he was back up to around 11 again. Sure does make ya wonder!  <alien>

We had one calf in October, 49 pound bull calf full term. Out of a first calf heifer. I have one due Feb 1st (heifer). The week before the new spring EPD's came out I used him on a Broker heifer, and of course she stuck (and she has a positive bw already)!
CCR (cow camp ranch) had a bunch of heifers that calved by him, and I was told not a one was touched (they calve out in pasture, and get very little human interaction). Had a Simmental rep tell me he used several canes of him on heifers and never touched a one.

Sad to see, and I would like to know why such a drastic drop too. He has 206 calves registered under his name, and 30 plus of those are the CCR calves. So, not sure. Grandmaster did the same thing, and I have never touched a Grandmaster calf out of a heifer or cow!

I believe I will still try him, just can't make sense of it plummeting like that.

Most likely the result of the EPD company changing the algorithm slightly. You should be able to view his progeny performance records and see how many required assistance. Also look at his sire/dam's EPD'S to see if one of them looks really poor now as well.

After studying the new Spring 2017 EPD's compared to Fall 2016 on the American Simmental Association site, I noticed that the MM numbers on both W/C United and W/C Lock Down dropped by almost exactly 10 points, similar to how much Broadway and CCR Wide Range changed. REALLY makes you wonder if an integer was missed or something is wrong with the calculation. I don't see how MM can drop that much in one season when the possible change factor is no where near that large for their current accuracy of MM. Just my 2 (or more like 25) cents!  ;D ;D

The more drastic change in EPDs within the Simmental breed could potentially be caused by BOLT (Biometric Open Language Tools). I encourage you to read about it here. Changes in EPDs will come to all breeds involved in IGS. http://www.internationalgeneticsolutions.com

Interesting read OK!! Still curious about how Wide Range went from a high CE down to a 3.3 and then back up to around 11 again! Might have something do to with it!
