Vaccination protocols
Multi min protocols

My cow herd diet consists of-
Hay
Free choice salt block
Free choice purina wind and rain

We have had problems with selenium deficiency in our calves. We treat with Bose at birth. Anything I could give the dam prior? Bose? Multi min?

We test all our forage in the fall before bringing the cows off grass. That way you have an idea what u need for your mineral program as that is there only source of energy. An idea for your minerals with your feeding program is to use all trace boluses. It's an oral injected tablet that will supply your cattle with the micro minerals you need like copper and selenium. You will have to look at ur purina tub info to see how much selenium is in the lick tub. As the boluses have the max required selenium u need for each cow u don't want to over do it Which can lead to high toxic levels in your calves. Then you can use a 1:1 mineral to make sure your cows are getting the macro minerals like calcium and phos. Which your hay may have already! Just my 2 cents!

During the summer when our cows are out on range we put out regular salt blocks and salt blocks that have minerals in them. Closer to calving and after calving we have a custom mineral lick that we feed the cows.

Our soil has chemical binders that suck up on the copper and selenium.

At birth out calves get a shot of multi-min.

There was a suggested vaccination protocol on SteerPlanet at one time. I don't know just exactly how to go find it for you. I believe that a vet had posted it up as a starting place but you'll want to know what to vaccinate for in your area and in your herd.

When I moved my operation to a new area in 2009 I lost a lot of cattle, even though I vaccinated for the prevalent diseases my herd was not previously exposed to.
On asking my new vet what I was missing, his reply was "What are you not vaccinating against?" His reply was that I should also vaccinate against those diseases as well, and still expect at least a 4% loss due to the inefficiency of the vaccines!
What can you say to that!
Minerals are on a farm-to-farm basis so I will not comment on that.
