i'm more of a have cows along with my job.

i'm an over the hill molecular biologist robotic programmer.

i've changed jobs/discipline about every 7 years which in silicon valley is a long time.  every time it happens, i have some catching up to do.  the older i get the harder it is.  you kids are going to find out about lots of interesting stuff and will invent brute force techniques you will get excited about in the beginning, they won't deliver on what was hoped for, and then it's on to the next generation.  the knowledge turnover is happening too fast for me anymore.

it really is almost a full time job just to read and sort literature.

I am an electric lineman, we work mainly distribution lines and some transmision.  After work and on the weekends I have my own business where I build decorative metal staircases, fences, balcony rails and entry gates.  I also install gate openers.  In all my spare time I mess with my cattle.  I did go to college where I got an elementry ed degree but I have never used it.

I run a lawncare and snow removal company as well as raise cattle. I was given a mower when I was 15 by my grandfather. went to college for turfgrass management and even worked for Jack Nicklaus for awhile. but I could not even come close working 8 - 10 hours at the golf course making what I did on the side mowing for people so I just decided one day to go at it solo. It was scary and the best day at the same time. My snow plowing and mowing have built my farm from nothing to where it is now. Hard work along with a little good luck and good things can happen.

I have only worked for myself, other than working a few cattle sales when I was younger. My cows have to generate my income so they have to work. I also own and publish the breed magazine for Canadian Shorthorns, called the Canadian Shorthorn Report. I do all the ad procurement, and write all the articles. My wife  Chris, does the ad design and magazine layout and Belinda Wagner ( who is Manager of the Sask Livestock Association) looks after subscriptions, billing and printing it. The magazine does not generate much extra money, but it does provide a little from time to time. My wife also has a home business doing ad design, sale catalogs and websites. This is quite seasonal as most of the work is in the spring and fall( at least with the sale catalogs) She does several sale catalogs each year as well as does the ad design and layout for two Angus organizations besides doing our Shorthorn publication.

FB I know how you feel. I've already done one tour of duty in college and have not even come close to narrowing things down! I'll tell you this, most of the time it seems that college is about finding out what you DONT want to do for the rest of your life.

wise words.  internships help narrow, expand the field as well.  i have a guy working for me now who is in college summer school and he spends lunches with different industry people who he has cold called to interview over lunch that he volunteers to pay for but hasn't had to yet.

I can almost say ditto to ROMAX.  I manage a similar plant, with organic and conventional soys and other beans on one line and flax on another.  My wife works in the state office of the FSA, as well as having her own die cast toy corral panel business.  We both would give up the day jobs to enjoy our cattle 24/7.

I work 24 hrs/wk as a CNA in the local nursing home/hospital....mostly is to have affordable health/dental insurance for the family; health insurance is priceless as when 6 years ago our then 17 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 or juvenile diabetes.  those bills are constant and ongoing and the health insurance that comes with a health care job is very good, in my situation anyway.

I applaud all that go onto get college degrees because even if you do not use it now, it maybe something you will need in the future; also college teaches invaluable life lessons and provides life-long friendship connections.

I quit college for nearly a year spent time doing an internship at a well known angus farm went back to Ga worked for a simmental breeder got a 'good' taste of how most rich folks with purebreds treat people. Got laid off right after the sale so I went back to college finished my B.S. and applied to a Carribean Vet school. I have been living in Grand Cayman now for a year. I have 1yr 4months down here before I start my clinical year rotation in the States. 8+ years of college and 180k in debt I will be a Veterinarian!!! Definitely the long way around. P.S. I better not here any jealousy about living next to the beach cause saltwater and sand ain't very useful if you ask me hahaha (lol)

Remember this word.  "Passion".  Its not about what we like to do, its what you have a Passion for.  You are going to make a career of this so you better have a Passion for it.  When you have a Passion for something, you cant wait to wake up in the morniing to meet and greet.  I love my job.  I found out early in life what I had a Passion for.  See deep inside you what you have a Passion for and the sky is the limit (unless your an astronaut).

I currently teach college agriculture, but taught high school AG for 9 years prior in California.  Before that I worked in animal research while getting my BS and MS at college. I also did a lot of animal reproduction work (mostly dairy, pig and horse- though I did help formulate and mass reproduce chicken semen extender! ). My husband is a retired California firefighter,  and is playing EMT right now (bored - Missouri is mostly volunteer firefighters ). He is cheif and I am captain of our local fire department.  This is our third year involved with simmental cattle, and he works to pay for our habits!
Find what you love most and make a career out of it. My love is agriculture and competition and his is FIRE and emergency.

Had to jump in on this post-there are alot of interesting careers out there.  I do believe you need to do what you feel passionate about.  For me-I teach 4th-8th grade PE and coach 7th& 8th grade football, basketball, track and tennis.  I LOVE every minute of my career...plus it pays decent to support my cattle hobby.
