If you can put some fairly cheap gain on them, I would background them to about 650-700 pounds and sell them in January. Really depends on your feedstuffs available and cost/lb gain.

In my part of the world (Kansas) I think the best time to sell is when we get some rain.  I would background them as cheap as you can and see if this weather will turn around.  If we get some wheat pasture, the calf market will get better in a hurry!

Typically, the national high for cattle prices falls in February and August most years. A lot depends on how you're set up to handle calves after weaning and how cheaply you can add gain. Heavier, weaned calved that are hard and ready to go straight on feed are worth quite a bit more than fat, light weight calves coming off the cow. If you have several that are uniform in size and breeding, look for somebody who might calves off the farm or another opportunity like video board sales or special calf sales as opposed to taking them straight to your local sale barn on a weekly sale day.
