I have a 3 yr old Golden Child heifer who had a 77# heifer calf last month out of a purebred angus bull.  In my opinion she is structurally sound, wide, thick, hairy, and has plenty of bone.  She lacks depth of rib, although she is long,  so she looks like a bratwurst.  What would you suggest I breed her to?  Calving ease is still important in my opinion, we needed to assist her with her 77# calf this year.  Neighbors have snidely commented “you bred her with that small of a pelvis?”.  She took right to her calf and the calf looks pretty darn good IMO.  My wife and daughter (her calf) were able to witness their first calf born in their lifetime so it was pretty cool.  I do not know if the cow is a TH carrier or not.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

We've got several Golden Child heifers we calved out this past fall.  All bred to Angus bulls - got a real good heifer out of Northern Improvement my youngest son is showing here in TX.  You can do a search under my name and find a photo of her from a show a couple of weeks ago.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him on these kind of females - for getting steers or heifers.

I bred several of them back to Troubador - but I have no idea how that'll work out till Sep.

The cow in my Avatar is a Golden Child. She had her second calf this year out of the Simmental clean up bull,  that little heifer calf gets better, and better every day.
I plan on breeding her to I-80, or Mercedes Benz for 2011. I think either one will be good.
I really like our Golden Child!

If you like her Northern Power calf she has this year I would breed her back similar.  Northern Power is a line bred Northern Improvement son, good luck!

I have a Golden Child heifer that had a 70# calf out of an angus bull this year.  I bred her back to Dirty Hairy 2.  Should be fairly easy calving for a 2nd calf.  He should also add some depth.

Ok im going to get a little flack for this maybe but I would say Mission Statement. The red angus bull that Genex carries. I have never seen calves with more rib depth and shape while being so young. They are very easy keeping and mature into wonderful cows or feed well as feedlot steers. Will you get a show steer out of her??? Not a chance but the heifer would be worth the wait. Good luck with her and keep us updated.

DakotaCow -- Are you guys using quite a bit of Mission Statement up that way?  How's your job going?  Am I going to see you at the big wedding this Friday?

For the most part everyone who has used MS used him again this year. We love our calves out of him but i wish I would have gotten more heifers. Been pretty busy and bred for quite a few people this year also. I just finished breeding our cows this morning and will be able to get out to the wedding, just wish we could get more hay up before that. See you there.

Ok wanted to bump this up and see what everyone would think now that this cow is now 12 years old.  Her best calves have been by:

1. Northern Improvement line bred bull by Smurf named Northern Power
2. TR MR Diablo 2472Z ET a char bull
3. Business Done Right

Her worst calf was by I-80, too much Maine lined up.  And also by the Northern Power bull where the calf looked like an old school Chi calf.

This year she is bred to Holy Smoker.  Before she is done we would like to try sexed semen and hopefully get a nice heifer.

She is THC.  What would everyone suggest?

Gargan, Do you know something about Smoker that I don't?  Does your profile pic have a connection?

Just that he is way under used. A friend of mine saw him as a mature bull at Rodgers place and said he was phenomenal.  I've seen several good ones out of him with limited use. I have one due any day. The one in my profile pic is not out of him .

Just out of curiosity, did you ever get any calves out of the Golden child cow with 2 sets of ears like Golden child had in the promo pic out there?
