OK, before the screaming starts, remember we have a feedlot that any carriers can go to.
Since Irish Whiskey semen has started to drop in price, the nephew is looking at getting some. What type of cows work best w/ him? What lines seem to click best?

I really think IW's best niche is on Angus cows. He stoutens 'em up and prettys 'em up. He also seems to work really well on Simmental cows, especially to change the bigger, plainer ones. I'm not really sure what kind of MA cows he works best on. I'm thinking about flushing a Fullback x 6807 (Angus) and a Buck x Polled Prenier x Angus (Sim/MA/Angus) to him this spring (I can send the carriers to my uncles feedlot). I'm using Big Whiskey (a tested clean, IW x Precision Angus) quite a bit this fall, and plan on using him next spring, too.

red - you are an adult, you are capable of making rational decisions, you were a charter member of the PHA patrol, you test, you plan to put your carriers in your feedlot why do you expect screaming?? You asked a reasonable question - hopefully you were expecting reasonable answers - why would you expect screaming???

I don't like the bull phenotypically but think DLD is right he works best on Angus, although some of the IW x Chill Factor females looked pretty nice in pictures at least .....

YYYYYYYYAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!    My Christmas challenge did not include screaming!  Whew, I feel better now.

Don't those PHA calves have a hard time squirming up to the bunk?  ;D

Ok, In all seriousness, I would try him on some really good boned red angus cows.

I have several IW daughters out of a PB Angus cow.  They are ALL clean!! (clapping)  They are bred and I am anxiously waiting to see how they milk.  If they pass the test they will be permanent fixtures here.  They have an incredible maternal look, thick, pretty fronted, sound and moderate.  The angus cow they are out of is fairly framey, at least by my standards, but deep ribbed and feminine.  All of the IW's we raised were like peas in a pod!  I am really pleased with them.  Can't wait to see their calves!!!!

The IW's I've been around have been sound and long strided. Some of them could track a little wider, but some of that can probably be accredited to their mommas, too. Big Whiskey, for example, just looks like a good, souped up Angus. I think he's the kind that could be just the ticket for those tighter wound, freakier, clubby bred cows.

Even though Paddy O'Malley is a carrier he goes back to Habanero and then Topper x Magic. Some of DL's favorite genetics (Pistol Pete, Topper and FR Magic)and mine too. Maybe DL is sitting (not literally) on some of the missing links to complement these new wave of  carrier genetics.  ???  DL, you might be in a very good position from a  marketing standpoint.

DLD, I agree with him working well on good angus. I would like to have a few clean f1's out of good Angus cows.

Wild Turkey(who is clean) is so far my favorite son of IW. He goes back to Stout and Polled Premier and some other good stuff.

For some reason JDS Stout seems to work quite well with PHA genetics.

red - preconcieved notions are often in error  ;)

telos - imagine that! Topper, Magic and Pistol Pete - now all we need is Midas - speaking of Pete I really like his purebred females -

POM was bred in Michigan and I know the maternal granddam - nice cow. There was a PHAF POM bull at the OBE that was really fabulous - Zahn's  raised him and he won the Indiana (?) state fair

as everyone knows I am not keen on using carrier genetics (really who would have guessed    ) but I have seen some nice PHAF offspring from carriers - it is simply a gamble and a hassle I personally do not think is worth it for my program - please y'alll in the spirit of Christmas have a great night and stay warm
