This is an Eskimo Joe dtr out of a Missie Ruth cow(so she's purebred Shortie). She's PHAC. She had a pretty nice Primo hfr for her 1st calf & just had a bull calf by my Improvers Stride bull. She's pretty moderate framed , milks pretty good, fleshes easy & moves real well.Would like to thicken her up a little. Her bull calf by Stride is freakish on his bone.  I don't want to down size her anymore than what she is now. I want to use a black Maine bull on her & was thinking about Kadabra. Is that a good or bad choice? What would y'all use? Picture isn't the best, once again I took it with my phone this evening.

I would use Hannibal probably....Kadabra makes them pretty, but he can get them high gutted and maybe not quite thick enough.  Hannibal will frame her up a bit and he makes them pretty dang thick from what I've seen.

I'll know more next spring, but we bred most of our SH sired cows to Gig. Joe last summer. I have also been watching the Dubai bull. He's a 3/4 IW son that is clean. GCC cattle company owns him. Brent

We also bred several of our Shorthorn Plus cows to Gigolo Joe, we'll know in March how that worked, but are really excited about the prospects.  I would try Joe over Hannibal or Kadabra, I don't think she appears to have enough depth for Kadabra, when Hannibal works they are great, but I have seen some real structure issues out of him.

I agree about the depth issue with using Kadabra..I posted that before I saw the picture, just based off description and pedigree.  I am really excited about Gigolo Joe on Shorthorn animals too.. I think we're going to breed our show heifers to him this year. Either him or Money Man..it's been hard getting dad convinced to use Maine bulls on our heifers, but I think it will really work.

I got to see the Missie Ruth cow at Mantuas and she is one of the better and most over looked cows I have ever seen. I would think the more purebred daughters you have tracing back to her the better. Would Durango be to obvious of a choice. Surely you think more of your cows then to cross them up, don't you? ;D

I used Kadabra pretty heavy for two years and was fairly disappointed with the results a variety of black cows.  Main problem was structure related - especially on the front legs.  I think there are a lot better half blood bulls to pick from if that was what you really wanted.  I saw a 5/8 bull called Patton that Griswold is promoting along with bull calves from his first calf crop that I really liked.  Don't know if they'd work shortie, but Patton is clean.  Lots of choices for purebreds.

I agree with Chambero on Kadabra's structural issues. I'd be concerned with color if she were mine. No black with white socks for me. I would not fight the force. I'd be looking for a red and white Maine. Perhaps a Fullblood. It's a guaranteed  win/win situation in the color department.

Telos,  I'd venture to say he's after a blue roan if he wants a black Maine bull.  (yes, I too am a fullblood fan, but just because they're not fullblood doesn't mean they're not good).

I myself, would not use Kadabra on her (or much of anything for that matter).  I have used him in the past and was not impressed.  The calves were big and luthargic when they were born.  I also didn't like their tailhead set and agreed with the statement that they are cut up in the flank.

Chill Factor could be a good choice in regard to composition, but only a 50/50 gamble on color.

I am not too astute with bulls that are not Griswold bred...so, what are people thoughts on bulls like Payoff, Mitten Man or Cigar, for this application?  Never used any of them, just curios what breeders thought of them.

I have always wondered why Boone used mitten man. From what I've heard he does a god job making them thick.

The Mitten Man sired calves @ Denver last year were impressive and I have seen some really good Cigar females. The Payoff's are good females also. Brent C.

We had six Mitten Man calves this year. They have alot of growth, deep sided, and thick topped, but they were flat made in the rearend. I also agree with Dr Who.
