I have a Jesse James heifer I was planning to keep and breed for show calves for the kids.  We are primarily a commercial operation and I realize that commercial and show are two different worlds.  My worry is the size of this heifer.  I know a lot of the clubby bulls of today are moderate but I am worried about calving issues with her.  She looks to me like she will be a very small cow.  I was thinking of using Comfort Zone in hopes for a small calf that may still have some frame and grow.  Where do you expect your heifers to be growth wise at 7 months.  Like I said I know clubby and commercial are different but there has to be some grow I would think.  I guess what I am asking is do you use small frame cows with success in your clubby operations or would you just cut your losses and get rid of her?

If it were me I would get rid of because clubby heifers tend to have calving issues or if you really want to keep her I would Use a angus bull the first year.

if everyone sold every clubby heifer they had to the salebarn then there would be no such thing as club calves- not saying the world couldn't survive without club calves but that's a little bit of a stretch to say sell them all because clubby heifers have calving trouble

However, "calving ease" and clubby are not to be used in the same sentence. If you like her breed her to a purebred bull that you can visually read statistics on, I like the angus idea or red angus. What's good for you is Jesse james isn't a cow killer (granted I don't know the heifers maternal side) so you shouldn't see tons of birthweight on her side of it. Even if her mother is hard calving- breed her angus the first time and get that first calf done- and you'll have 3/4 known bloodlines of "calving ease"

Moderate cows do have a place, just like tall cows do- there are Bulls out there that can add frame down the road that can make your heifer a wise investment

Under no circumstances would I cut ties with a heifer with no known health issues, based off what the congregation of steer planet advises

Breed he to Moto Moto.  He is a full blood bull, so you will get heterosis with the calf.  His BW are low and calves are built to come easily.  His daughters typically weigh 500-600 at 7 months.

The resulting calf can be kept as a replacement or sold to feed out.
