I've heard of feeding 50:50 corn and wheat as the grain source in diet. Wouldn't want to go much higher than that.

In a discussion with Jim Meno, former ISU extension agent and fantastic Columbia sheep breeder from Hudson, IA, he told me to limit wheat to 25% of the diet because the excess gluten will coat the gi tract and limit absorption of other nutrients.  I took this to mean that wheat, in its raw form, was a rather poor feed source.  Wheat is not a feed source in Iowa and the topic was just a discussion point.

i have been told that you feed wheat at the same rate as you would feed oats. we ran out of oats and had to use wheat instead and the cattle absolutly went nuts over it, ate 5lbs per head more than they did when i had oats in it.

Thanks everyone. Interesting comments. I have been feeding some weaned calves about 60:40 barley and wheat for 5 days and this am they went off feed. Before this it was oats instead of wheat and there was no problem.

When we were running our feedlot, and finishing cattle, we often were asked if we would buy some low quality wheat to use, as we are located in wheat country. Personally, I am not a big fam of feeding wheat, unless it is mixed with oats at about 15% by weight. Above this, we found that the wheat gluten would turn " gummy" when the cattle were eating it, and it caused more digestive upsets, as cattle were going off feed then eating too much again . On the other hand, we did add some frozen wheat to our silage one year and had absolutely no problems feeding it.
You may be able to feed wheat at more than 15% of the grain portion of the ration, however, I think you will have more digestive upsets than I expect you are wanting.

We feed about 95% wheat and finish our calves on it.  Our ration is mostly screenings from our seed company.  There are weed seeds and very rarely is there any oats or barley, but mostly oversized and broken wheat kernels.  All our grain is processed through a roller mill.  The balance of our ration is distillers waste, minerals and bovetec.  We are able to get about 2.5 lbs gain per day average.  The only reason we feed wheat is that is cheap feed.  I know that you can get a better gain from other feeds, but this works for us.
