Well, anything's possible but hacker/spammers have been hacking e.address books for a very long time.  They get into a person's address book, take it for their own (well, sort of ....it's more technical than that), then use those addresses to send out their own spam.  People open them because they have the return addresses of whoever got hacked and they trust the email will be ok.  Sometime just opening the email captures that recipient's addresses.  It's a virus, of sorts.  I'd run my virus software to see what might be in your computers and isolate it if possible.

One other way your email ends up in the hands of spammers is the "if you don't forward this to ten friends" chain email. They get you to voluntarily give them your friends emails this way. Then they get the email back with hundreds of address.
