My son caught a calf Saturday night in Houston and has decided steers are not for him. He wants a heifer. Does anyone have any reccomandations on where to buy a really good heifer in Texas? Willing to drive anywhere in Texas to pick it up and we have a little money to add on to the scramble voucher.

We've got crossbred heifers that can show as ORB in Houston.  Our heifers are very competetive at any level of show you want to go to in Texas.  The last scramble heifer I sent to Houston won her class in both the scramble show and the regular junior show.  I'm just now getting them weaned and ready to be clipped to try to sell.  I'll sell you (or anyone else for that matter) your pick of what I'm selling for $2500.  We have a market for females as replacements that will bring that.  Cattle are just high now.  I'll have photos in a couple of weeks.

I've got numerous blacks and a good red baldy out of MAB.  We live near Wichita Falls.  If you are interested in discussing, PM me and I'll give you my phone number.

If you want purebred Angus, the best breeder I can think of that prices cattle reasonably is Mike Christian.

Thank you for your reply. My son has his heart set on an angus but I like Charolais. Chars are hot right now. We just started our county show this week so it will be next week before make any decisions. We can't wait too long though, we have to have our first essay with our breed choice/plan by April 10th.
It's funny you suggested Mike Christian. A man that works for my husband played football for him in high school. He told us to contact him. My husband has already sent him an email

Mike is a very good guy and wants his calves in good homes.  If you buy one from him, ask questions from him and do what he tells you.

This is probably something I should talk to the calf scramble office about but I haven't gotten that far into the paper work yet but I thought everything had to be registered pure bred to show in the heifer show at Houston. How do you register an ORB or a crossbreed heifer. We have a contact in mason that we are getting our steers for county from and my younger son is getting a replacement heifer from them also. They are angus x char and they are beautiful smoke colored babies. We would like to talk to them about a scramble heifer but are unsure how to get registration papers on them.

It's unlikely those could be registered as anything.  I know the American Angus Association doesn't have a program that allows it, I'm not sure about the Charolais association. As a word of advice though, a crossbred heifer out of an Angus bull would have a very difficult time competing in an ORB class at Houston as a matter of principle.  The heifers that do well in ORBs are the feminine offspring of the "show steer" bulls or halfblood Maines or such.  It takes a very good heifer to compete in the ORBs - those classes are every bit as tough or tougher than the big Angus or Charolais classes.

A good registered purebred Angus or Charolais heifer is likely to cost you quite a bit more than crossbred heifers - just so you don't get sticker shock when you start looking.

A great sale is the Texas Limited Edition sale in Wills Point on April 5th. We have been to this sale for several years and there seems to be heifers for just about any Budget. this year there is 11 breeds represented along with a few steers.

You need to look at Bushy Park Farms website. They will have their annual summer and fall born heifer sale in Marietta, OK this Saturday. Their heifers are top of the line nationally. Their catalog is on their website. I'm going over there Friday to check them out before the sale. Always impressed.

If you're looking for an angus heifer check with Scott Pohlman. I don't know if he has anything at the time, but we bought 2 nice angus heifers from his parents and are very pleased with them. There's alot of the same blood in his herd and his parents herd. Just an idea, here is his site http://www.pohlmancattle.com/

Thank you everyone for your replies and advice. I had a chance last last night to look at the online catolog and there are some beautiful heifers on there I just can't get away from our county fair to go up there. Its at least an 8 hour drive from me. I have barely had time to glance at the paperwork but I know we have to do thank you letters and his first essay by April 12th before we can get the voucher released. We can't really go to any sells or auctions because the voucher is made to the seller after the sell does a bunch of paperwork. So anyone who sells us a calf has to wait for hlsr to approve the purchase and release the money. I'm still confused as to how the registration process works especially in the crossbreed heifers but we have to have original registration papers in my sons name by dec 1. I'm starting to think a steer would be easier. It's all very overwhelming when you don't know what you are doing lol.

I would sure check out the Bluebonnets & Buckles online sale the TMAA is going to be putting on right here on SteerPlanet.  There will be several nice Maine and Chi heifers, that should sell for affordable prices.  Any of the sellers in the sale will be happy to work with kids with scramble certificates.  Most all of us have had experience with them.  Sale ends on April 26th at 7pm.

Message, call, or email me if you have any questions about the sale.

I got to go check out the Bushy Park calves yesterday and Wow! I was really impressed at how many quality heifers they had. They always do, but the ones that I had checked in my catalog to look at looked even better now. Usually once my top 2-3 go for more than im willing to spend Im usually out at most places, but m pretty optimistic I can go 6 or 7, maybe further, on my list of what my kids have picked out and bring something home Sat. Cory Thomsen really is helpful and knows his stuff. He spent about 2 hours looking at cattle with me and my kids and didn't seem bothered with us taking up his time one bit. Classy operation.

Very neat looking little heifer. The color is very eye catching. How much? Where is she located? Can I get a pic from the back and a profile? Please send me  PM. It will be a month or more before we know anything about payment on the scramble certificates. At this time they actually have the systems offline while they close out this year and get ready for the next. We can't turn in his papers or essay until they get the system back up.

We just had our sale and had three heifers and one steer that didn't meet their reserves. We are located in Oklahoma but would be willing to either deliver or meet part way. You can take a look at our website to see what we have left and if you are interested in any of them you can contact me. I am not 100% on how the vouchers work but if you could explain it to me we can see if that is something that we could work out. We also would do discounts if anyone would buy multiples, so if you have anyone else around looking and both wanted to go in on a couple we could work something out.
