I have 2 different hfrs for my nephew to choose from to show at our state fair. What does everyone think is the biggest factor or quality for a hfr to have when choosing a show hfr. 1 hfr is a smoke and  has more thicknest, length of body, bigger topped and bone. The other is black and is  maybe a bit deeper bodied but that is the only advantage she has over the smoke. Any thoughts?

My number 1 is the one you didn't mention, I don't care what color she is, take the one that is the most structurally correct.

Pictures would help a lot. Also something to consider, is this going to be a market heifer or breeding heifer?

Show both, the smoke as a market heifer and the black as a breeding heifer. What I've learned at state fairs is that maternal cowy type cattle are chosen over stouter cattle. As for market animals, stout and bone are big. Market animals work if they can walk and are big muscled and stout!

That's what I would do.

My thoughts exactly.
