I am looking for the benefit of cracked versus whole corn.  I want to buy a couple tons of corn before the prices goes higher but was wondering if it really mattered which one my son feeds to his show steer.

Thanks

I am guessing that cracked digest better?  My uncle on his dairy farm feeds whole corn and when the cows pass the whole corn it is still intact but the kernal is empty.  There stomachs must have to work overtime to get what they need out of it.

the benefit of digestibility disguised by how the cattle did, the price of processing the corn, loss of fines, and other factors people usually ignore.

note summary statement.

Thus farmers and ranchers who do not have corn process- ing or feed mixing equipment can expect to obtain competitive rates and costs of gain by feeding whole corn separately from forage components in calf growing rations designed to produce daily gains of 2.5 to 2.75 lb/day.

IMO if you're wanting to buy it & keep it for use as feed later, you'd be better off buying whole corn. 2 tons divided by 25lbs per day for one calf gives you 160 days worth of corn. As soon as you crack the kernel it loses it's natural protection and is exposed more so to molds especially. As to which is better for feeding most cases would be cracked, but there are arguments for feeding whole shell corn, but the cattle are usually on full feed of corn when this scenario works best. Hope this helps.
