Why are bulls selling like firecrackers?

At the Illinois beef expo the bulls as a whole sold very well. The Angus bulls were the easy sellers. I know at the end of the sale there were some that didn't sell well but I think you have that with every sale. There were some pretty high dollar bulls that sold at the futurity show and sale as well.
To be honest I thought that they were going to take a pretty hard hit. Thankfully I was wrong!

seems like everybody and dog has bulls for sale up our way but prices on the "name" sales were not good lot of no sells on the ones I was at. l think you may be right on light use of AI and embryo use this spring but like always AI pays a dividend

The sales that I have been to personally have been good IMO, but like Chambero said, some of the sales on Superior have been tough with a # of bulls hitting the gate without a bid.

The National Western Maine sale was down about a thousand a head, the Chi sale was down $500/head. As mentioned above, the tail end of virtually every Angus bull sale on RFD is packed with no-sales.

Well, Illinois isn't usually much better. The only time I keep a calf a bull is if he is exceptional! People comment on how I always seem to sell bulls but they don't realize how many don't make the grade! I will only keep at most 3 bullcalves back as bulls and they have to be pretty darn good! The crazy part is the guys out west always complain they can't get enough bulls! Different demands in different areas. When I check the sex of a newborn calf and see a package I always grumble!

Bull sales here have been strong, especially the one owner- on farm bull sales. The consignment sales have been tougher with a good market for the top end, then little interest in the rest. An Angus sale close to me averaged over $4000 on 120 bulls last week. Simmental sales have been very strong. One averaged $4700 on 108 bulls, on a day where it was -40 with wind chill calculated in. Another was $5700 average on 60 bulls. Some real highs in most sales, with more bulls over $20,000 than i have ever seen in my lifetime. I am not sure where the money is coming from as cattle prices were in the tank for a long while... they are moving upwards now. Lots of commercial buyers paying over $5000 for bulls with some going for commercial use at $8000 plus. In these cases, i think it is some oil money being spent. Good bulls are selling for premiums. We have a bunch of sales coming up in the next few weeks. i am thinking this trend will continue. Good prices for good bulls, ordinary bulls with no bids. The real trick is to figure out which are the real good bulls. We have had several people through our bull pens lately, and I am totally amazed which bulls are being picked out. Usually they are not my picks of the pen!
In a Simmental sale last week, the owner had a run away on his bulls, with close to a $10,000 average ( for the 4th year in a row). After the bulls he ran 6 open heifers in the sale ring and he offered choice of the pen. The winning buyer bid $43,000 and he took his pick. A lady in the crowd, was runner up bidder at $42,500. A ringman asked the owner if he would let another heifer go at $42,500 and the owner said " NO"!!! I heard that after the sale the lady again asked if he would sell another heifer and she offered him $43,000 for second choice, and he again said " NO". I would say that, that was a day when two fools met... her for offering it and the owner for not taking it.

Same thing down here.. bull sales are strong. I dont have the actual figures but I'm going to say that averages are almost what they were last spring. In my area, a lot of bulls went to town late last summer and need to be replaced.

Went to Crousaints Red Angus sale. Top bull 13,000$ several at 5- 6,000$. Then some bottom end bulls heifer bulls brought 1500$.

Neighbors Charolais Bull Sale was the best he has had in a long while. Bulls sold great and the weather was terrible rain snow cold.
