Just want to get some thoughts on what bull would you use one this heifer? She is Wide Range daughter out of a Upgrade cow. I feel she needs some softness and some drop to her lower 1/3 and clean up her shoulder a bit. Was thinking maybe Swinger or northern made 10D....or just use a low birth weight Angus bull in the tank. What's your thoughts?

It depends on what you want to do with her. She's not bad looking, just plain. If you wanted to jazz her up some via Angus I'd go Insight or Blue Chip. Simmental, I'd look at Optimizer, or One Eyed Jack (many others to choose from as well).

Gargans bull Red Revolver certainly has the pedigree, I haven't seen any recent pics but the early calves looked good. I'm sure he will add his opinion on RR soon.

Mark, would you use primo on a first calf heifer?///// Im not an Angus expert-but I;m assuming he isnt a bad calver-it depends upon your heifer-Simms-like Shorthorns tend to have bigger calves as a rule-so a 50-60 pound calf might end up a runt-maybe an Angus person will come on and straighten me out-like the looks of him tho-I mean there are a TON of CE bulls. Since she's most likely got the growth numbers from Upgrade and WR, she would probably give you a good calf out of Uno Mas. He also has sorted heifer semen available. W/C Lock Down is another one I've really liked the calves out of, MM is a bit low if you're a number cruncher. If you're looking for maternal value and sorted heifer semen, ST genetics has sorted heifer semen available on Hook's Blackhawk and TJ Northward..

Well I'd like to make the potential calf a show calf prospect but in the end I want a animal that can perform in the field. We want to raise animals that can perform in the ring but go out to the pasture and raise us calves.

Since you are productio oriented i would look at Hooks Beacon for a calving ease Simmental:http://origenbeef.org/semen_detail.php?bull=544
For an angus if your heifers own performance reflectes her EDPD you may wan to consider HF Tiget 5T: http://hamiltonfarms.ca/our-herdsires/

Simmgal have you seen any black hawk calves?

I'll have some in a few months. There were some really nice daughters that topped their sale back in the spring.
