I am not an expert by any means, but I used the Andis 5/8" blade on a heifer's neck last weekend. That blade seemed to leave just the right length of hair. Plus, because it's blocked, you can press it right onto the calf. Good luck.
You have to look at your calf. If you have one that is excessively hairy you need to balance the neck with the rest. That is a good thing. You can disguise or add alot with hair. Depends on what you calf needs. ps- I am not an expert either nor do i play one on tv.
Ha! Being an old blind fart anymore is no fun but dicovering the 5/8 blades have been great. Really great for those lesser broke cattle that don't yet want to stand or those spoiled show heifers that know just what they are doing. Of course, I guess we all could just ace them down but we say no to drugs around here. At least for the critters! <beer>
I just depends on your animal and the show you are going to. If your going to a jackpot its okay to go a little clubby and shape up the neck exactly how you want it.
But for an open breeders show i would peal it off, just take it down tighter. At least with heifers you do.
