Farm deaths & injury's are one of the highest in young people. I've lost a good friend who died in a grain bin, had one that lost an arm to NH3, one that was killed when the mower flipped over. It's a dangerous profession & all need to make sure you are safe at all times. Still bothers me to see kids riding on tractors or lawnmowers w/ their parents.
I used to give talks at schools on farm safety. Firm believer of trying to practice what I preached. I know my guys will go without enough sleep this time of year which is a big no-no too. Also other vehicles on the road when you are driving a tractor or pulling equipment is scary.
Be safe out there to all!!!

I bought this farm 13 years ago - the following bad things have happened to friends/neighbors in that time in our little county

Farmer on tractor on road - during bright beautiful day - hit from behind by milk truck - killed
Hand lost in combine - farmer thought combine was off
Farmer loading cattle with trucker, slipped, hit head, died
Farmer loading tractor on flat bed - tractor flipped over,  died
Farmer putting gas in hot motor - caught on fire - died
Farmer lifting round bales with front end spear - flipped on him - crushed him - lived - months of rehab

This doesn't count the "little" injuries - the smashed knee, the cut tendons in the thumb when the steer (soon to be steer) kicked, the girl trampled by the bull, kid kicked in the head by steer, etc now does it include the farmer killed by his own dairy bull during TB testing (dofferent county) , the 3 vets killed by bulls (different states),,,

agriculture is dangerous - with or without animals - I think I just read that ag is the 2nd most dangerous profession behind construction (?? can't remember) but just look at the difference in # of people in the 2 fields...we need to be vigilant - it isn't only the aliens after us!

Ahh, worst injury? well I haven't been showing very long... but it's either the time I was just walking my cow to the trailer...didn't think anything about it so I didn't put on my boots.. just some slip ons ( STUPID I KNOW ) and she happened to step funny and landed right on my toe.. I was screaming and tryin to push her off but she just stood there and looked at me like she was waiting and wondering why I had stopped walking... never had my foot swell up like that in my life!!... or maybe the time the rope halter ripped my hand open... or maybe.. oh well nvm.  (lol)

this happened on my 10th wedding anniversary and is my worst injury involving livestock.....

My first cowdog was about 4 months old.. took him with me on my ATV to tag and tattoo a baby calf from a 1st calf heifer.....BIG MISTAKE.... Well as i was setting on the calf getting ready to tattoo it the pup decides that he needs to get down and piss off the cow... So I figured "Great he is keeping her busy and she is leaving me alone"... just about then the pup circles around behind and now I am between the cow and the dog sitting on her precious baby... well that was just more stress than she could deal with.. so in one move she rolled me off that calf onto my stomach and procedes to stomp all over me... as I fight to get up she stomps me down 4 times.. The 4th time she lands on my head tearing off the upper 1/3 of my left ear....I finally get to my feet and away from her.. gather up the pup and ride about 1/2 mile back to the house where my lovely wife  BTW has taken a personal day off from school..(She is an Ag teacher).. I tell her that I got hurt and I don't know how bad it is... well when she sees the ear missing she handles it quite well but after 3 hrs in the ER and a trip via ambulance to Columbus and Grant hospital. where I was still covered in mud manure and green tatto ink they cut off all my  perfectly good clothes CT my head find out there is no danger to my melon and the young plastic surgeon is trying to convince me that they can take tissue from my ribs and make me a new ear..... I started to laugh cause they wanted me to agree to that when I had 2 1/2 perfect hoof prints and 5 drew claw marks across my back.which now hurt worse than my ear thanks to a local they gave me so they could sew back together what was left of the ear.. So needless to say that since i was never going to get any prettier anyway and the girl chasing days were way behind me I decided to leave it....
