I looked at Wymore and progeny in 2005. Loved him and all of the Darrell daughters. Bessie cow family. That might be the photo I took that you posted? I know I always preferred his body capacity to his sire Gizmo.

he's a nice bull.  who cares if he's a carrier.  he looks good enough to use and screen offspring.

there's a test, that's what the test is for.

there are more defects coming, in ALL breeds.

use the tests, keep the genetic base wide with the phenotype and pedigree one likes.

narrowing the genetic pool due to fear is stupid.

narrowing the genetic pool due to a certain look is annoying and will eventually box itself in not due to the defect, but the genetic base.  they probably will eventually require a certain outcross background to excel with and some people probably already know this.

I agree. I like the breeding on this bull- I think it is a good cowmaking line.
I would use him, test and cull.
He is an example of prepotent genetics that require educated management. If he is DSF, so much the better and an example of a very useful non carrier from carrier bloodlines. Also an example of why the resistance to managing defects advocated by some and incipient witch hunt for offspring of carriers is problematic.

if i was doing shorthorns, the path is obvious.

do what x-bar is doing plus adding this line.

validate some lines for quantitative traits and retained ownership will be more advantageous than selling cattle.

then, the feeders and/or their buyers will buy them direct cutting out the loss of through the sale barn, a win for both sides of the equation not often analyzed in profit loss statements.

Knabes answers sum it up for me, here, and with other bulls I find usefull. And dont forget the hip and BW moderation (most of the time) from this line of cattle-unmistakeable,and as preponent a trait (at LEAST THE HIP) as you will see from ANY bull of ANY breed.. They all share a very similar makeup:from Gizmo-to-Throwback-to Lucky Ralph-to Wymore, and to who knows how many really good calves in the backroads of Kansas and Missouri over many years of Elbee selling bulls O0 O0
