I remember this was pretty interesting reading last year so will start it up for 2010.

We have had 19 calves so far and only 5 of those are heifers! Frustrating!

Most of these calves were AI and ET. Also we are seeing birthweights higher across the board, across all sires lines probably due to the long extended cold weather that we have had since early December.

So far we have lost 1 calf due to being stepped on/crushed and have lost a cow to pregnancy toxemia but saved her calf.

How is it going for you?

10 Calves so far 35 more to go, 5 bulls 5 heifers. Birth weight average up about 10 pounds from previous years.  7 0f the 10 betweeen 100 and 120 lbs and the other 3 are between 75 and 83 lbs.  Birth weight have been a litte weird but all unassisted so far.

We have been fighting off bull calves like flies so far this spring, hoping for heifers.  Just ultrasounded our first batch of fall bred cows hoping for bull calves and what do you know, only on bull out of 13 calves.  At least some of the heifers will be by
WMW and some simmy bulls.  Not sure what to do with those Walks Alone heifers.  Best to just hope for live ones I guess.

Eight cows calved and have nine calves.  The set of twins are heifers so that gives us seven heifers and 2 bulls.  Thats puts our little outfit half way done.  "Knock on wood," so far calving has been rather uneventful here.  Been cold but have facilities to handle it.  I'd much rather fight the cold and snow than the rain and mud later on.

I haven't had enough calves yet this year to notice a trend (only 3), but my 'worst' year was in the late 80's.  I synchronized 7 two year olds, all settled to AI service, and every one of them had a bull calf, from 4 days early to 7 days late.  3 of the calves were sired by GR Dreamboat and 4 were sired by GR Exclusive, a son of Dreamboat.  Talk about frustrating.

Just got to 30% bulls as of last night and over half done.  Everything has gone perfect so far!  Little break now.  Next group starts 3/13.  Ah ...  a couple nights of continuous sleep!
