Yellow and white simmentals
« on: July 20, 2011, 07:51:13 PM »
Anybody still breeding traditional yellow and white simmentals?
Back in the day they were quite popular, quite big, but popular.
I can still find semen on a bull we showed successfully many years ago.

Funny that you post this , well not quite by choice but every now and then the old flower pattern comes shineing through ! Had a heifer born in march out of a black pb cow and a black baldy pb bull that came out totally traditional simmy colors ! Good lookin heifer , kinda reminds me of the old days . There are a few fleck herds around the country yet with the traditional colored cows but pretty tough to find a simmental herd of them anywhere .

Sometimes we will get some funky coloring out of our black whiteface Simmental bull. He has some rally old blood in him, and can be traced back to some of the early Simmentals a few generations back. As far as herds, I bet you could find some over in Europe. I feel like I have seen pictures!

Come to Canada! They're are still lots of herds here. Lewis Farms still sells a wack of them every year and this year they averaged around 5000........ A Traditional Simmi is as common as the Reds and Blacks. It's one of the reasons why Red Angus are so popular cuz the traditional commercial Simmi herds have been crossing them with the Red bulls for years.

That's cool! I wish there were more herds in the U.S. I love the color! The stockyards don't though, otherwise I'm sure we would have them!

Last year at the big Fleckvieh and fullblood Simmi sale they averaged 4,200 and the high seller was 10,250 on the bred heifers. Only 17 bred heifers sold but still shows that there is a market for them up here. The bulls averaged 3,300.

Lots over here to probably more than the straight colours last year at the World Simmental Congress in Melbourne all the winners were traditional coloured cattle. But the judge was Scottish.

Simmgal is right there are lots of traditional color cattle still in Canada, but not many yellow and white ones, and even the Fleckvieh and Traditional guys are trying to get more and more red on them. I am glad to see them still around. I think it gives the breed some diversity.

This is Lewis Farms. Wonderful people.

They were big and beautiful cows.  Challenger matured at about 64" and 3000 pounds yet threw smaller framed, thick smokey/brown calves out of Angus cows.   I'd love to use him again on some yellow cows.

I bet that was neat! Now the only hope for "color" we have are the whitefaces! hahaha! I do wish that those big yellow ones were still around.
