The good news Will, about the cold temps here in Oklahoma, is it sure is good for growing hair.  ;D
Just trying to think positive.

It has been good for growing hair and getting the cattle to eat.  Just not getting many days we can wash and work all that hair.

16 below here in central Iowa this morning with 40 below wind chills.  It was so cold I even put my hood up.  I don't do hats, but I just had to pull the hood up this morning.  At least I don't have to walk through 6 feet of snow....yet.

I heard on the radio that the environmentalists released a statement claiming that global warming allowed the polar vortex to escape from the north pole.  In the winter of 1996, we had about a week straight when it NEVER got above zero, not even the highs for the day.  Since we're going to be in the 30's in a few days, I assume the polar vortex just didn't escape for as long this time.  Instead of global warming, I think it's just another communist plot.  I wish they'd keep their Siberia to themselves.

we don't get alot of real cold weather and haven't had a white xmas since 2003 until this year and we are buried here in Prince Edward Island, Canada. There is 2.5-3 feet level in the fields and just spent $1000 in wages shovelling off rooves.

It's just absolutely insane all across North America. I can't imagine how you guys feel that aren't used to this sort of cold and the animals. It's super hard on them. Good point about growing hair and getting animals to eat though! :)

A few nights ago with the wind chill it hit right around -50C here in East Central Alberta, Canada. This cold snap needs to take a hike!

We have widgusts bringing in that cold-and they will get up to-30-49 MPH-the low temps will be maybe 2-10 below zero plus winds15-40-which is coldest in 20 years here. Not like Iowa or Ill-but a pretty humid cold-you feel it.I dont know how you can even start a vehicle when its 50 below-very dangerous weather O0

If you're not used to it it's pretty darn cold no matter what tempature.  (lol)

As far as vehicles starting... they sure didn't around our place. Thank goodness we had fed up for a few days, because our tractor was not having anything to do with starting haha.

-18 this morning. -40 with wind chill.
Truck started - it is gas but had a plug so I plugged it in last night.
3 waterers good.
1 waterer unplugged but a little hot water fixed it.
1 waterer still frozen but everything has water so I am not worried.
Hydrant froze but got it thawed with little problem.
Silo and bunks all worked without a hitch.
Discovered those funny looking "tinfoil" lined snow pants actually work great! Never got cold once.
Also discovered my carhartt  helmet hat with ski mask is great. (Although snot does freeze!)

No calves. All is well. Life is good. I DO like winter!  Bring it on!

GO AUBURN!!

We are 20 minutes west of Ottawa Ontario earlier today was plus three and half an inch of rain and tonight is going to -40 with the wind chill and 50 mph winds.  We have had at least two weeks of -25 also to go along with 3 plus feet of snow before xmas .

I came in from chores Fri. evening and told my wife we now operate a Hotel 6.When it gets below 0 wind chill I put the girls (cows) in our three sided barn and tell them enjoy the hotel. I leave one light on so they can find the automatic water. I am sure they enjoyed being out of  the wind  with a  -20 wind chill that night.

-4 you say!  We just wear a light sweater at that temp. Yes, it has been a bearcat for weather for the past several weeks. Sorry that we had to send it south and east of here but after that many days of wicked weather, we really didn't care where it went as long as it left here. Each day this week is supposed to be better and melting by Saturday. I heard on the radio yesterday that with the wind chill it was equivalent to -64F. A person did not have to think about what to wear, as the only thing that made sense was to wear everything you owned. Where I live in SE Saskatchewan, our worst weather usually comes out of Montana - in summer or winter. This time it came from the Artic and possibly even from Siberia. Hopefully that is the last real nasty stuff for this winter.

Last night it was a brisk -22 here in Glenrock Wyoming, will feel like a heatwave to me tomorrow with a projected high of 37F. My diesel will start at the -22 as long as she is plugged in and have the anti gel additive in the fuel. As far as the cows when it is that cold, have to take the axe down to the creek and chop a hole in the ice for them to get water, otherwise the creek will usually stay open and not freeze over till around zero.

They may eat more but all those calories go to staying warm, not gaining weight.  May get their stomach stretched some though for when it does warm up.
