I just weighed my bulls and I was surprised how good they are gaining despite this nasty cold weather. I found the same thing last winter when we had a month of cold temps, wind blowing and large amounts of snow. That month my bull pen made their best gains. Today is showing that all the bulls have gained more in the past 30 days ( which has been pretty ugly weather) than they did in the 30 day previous to that. Today when I went out to weigh them, it was -32 F with the wind chill. The bulls were all out playing, running and kicking up their heels in the pen. I guess they are taking this cold stuff better than I am!

I might be getting used to the cold.  This morning it was 16 and I was sweating like it was July while out cutting ice so the cows could drink.

-24 today feels like -42 with the wind. Radio broadcasted that skin will freeze in less than five minutes! I am exactly half way between Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario. Ad a calf born this morning, a little nippy for that in my opinion! Calf is fine though.

Feels somewhat like a heatwave today in SW Iowa.  All the cattle are sure gobbling down the hay in the cold to generate heat, but that is ok-- they are all pretty fat and sassy anyway.
We fortunately haven't had to have a diesel started through all this, so hopefully next time it will be warmer when we have to start a tractor.  :)  We put a bunch of feed out before it got cold.  Keeping the water open has been another story--  the waterer's have actually taken this round of cold pretty good-- only one froze up one day so far.
Aussie-- that is not nice to tempt us with your beautiful beach pictures......  LOL

Think Spring!

We set a record low this morning of -4.  You guys need to keep your cold and leave us guys from Oklahoma alone.

-4 you say!  We just wear a light sweater at that temp. Yes, it has been a bearcat for weather for the past several weeks. Sorry that we had to send it south and east of here but after that many days of wicked weather, we really didn't care where it went as long as it left here. Each day this week is supposed to be better and melting by Saturday. I heard on the radio yesterday that with the wind chill it was equivalent to -64F. A person did not have to think about what to wear, as the only thing that made sense was to wear everything you owned. Where I live in SE Saskatchewan, our worst weather usually comes out of Montana - in summer or winter. This time it came from the Artic and possibly even from Siberia. Hopefully that is the last real nasty stuff for this winter.

I think we got to -20 windchill.  Problem is Kansas is we are a bit of a tweener between the north and south and a ton of houses (my included) run off heat pumps.  Once you hit about 25 or below, it starts become real inefficient, heat strips kick on, and your meter goes round and round.  I kept a fire going on the 2 coldest nights we had, but still a losing battle on keeping that house real warm.

Me to, and mine actually will turn off at I think it was -5 so I woke up to no furnace going.  Thank goodness for space heaters and a wood stove.
