NICE WEEKEND

We had great weather this weekend with temperatures up in the 70’s and more importantly it was DRY! Very seldom in southern Ohio do you get two nice days stacked on top of each other this time of year and for them to fall on the weekend was an added bonus. I took advantage of the nice weather by cutting up two truckloads of fire wood {down tree’s & limbs from the past months wind & ice storms}, getting Bash washed and clipped up a little bit. I also loaded up the scales and weighed a couple of friends calves, both are doing well and one of them is gaining a whopping 3.9 pounds a day. The better half and I even managed to get out and take a look at some of claves at Valley Hill Farm.

February 28th & March 1st 2009
Greene County Fairgrounds, Xenia, Ohio

One of the closest shows for us to visit during the Ohio winter show season is the one held in Xenia. Overall it is a nice facility, I would prefer the showring to be bigger but the barn’s are very nice, well kept and nicely designed. The show is ran smoothly and we have always enjoyed our stay during the show weekend in Greene County.
Saturday started off rough as I had a throbbing head ache, which put a damper on the entire day. Karee did well in showmanship making the cut in class and finishing with a 7th place overall finish. Her market class was a different story as Ol’Boy finished 6th out of 8. With One mans disappointing opinion, my head still throbbing and the girls wanting Mexican to eat I opted for two Tylenol P.M’s and an early retirement to the Knights Inn bed of somewhat comfort.
Come Sunday morning my headache had subsided, I was revived and ready to go at 5:45. I don’t know if it was the Tylenol, stiff bed or the butt kick`n we took the day before but I was feeling good and revitalized however the girls were not feeling the energy especially in the pre-sunrise hour. Anyway we made it to the fairgrounds, got the calves feed, watered, washed and ready for the days show. Again we found ourselves with a new twist on Sunday’s show, the judge had brought along an intern who was helping him judge. We were a little confused at first as to how this was all going to work out but the Judge got on the Mic and clearly stated that he was making the final say on all placing and the intern was there to watch, learn, offer his opinion and receive a little mic time on reasons. I must admit it was neat listing to the intern progress in his reasoning’s as the day went on, and I think it is great that an established judge will take a young man under his wing so to speak and help him get his feet wet in evaluating cattle.
On to the show result. Karee was on the mark in Showmanship as she was named Champion for her division and like my head Ol’Boy had a better day as well finishing 3rd in class.
Well we are off now till the Expo in March which will rap up Karee’s 4th B.E.S.T. season. Currently she is in the hunt for a Top 5 finish in Showmanship and a top 10 finish in cross bred steer points. Either of which would first time accomplishments for her. Till next time The Nasc Clan!

February 14th & 15th Clark County Cattle Battle

Without a doubt Clark County has the nicest facility we visit a year and the most expensive.

Still I suggest showing there if you ever get the opportunity.

The Cattle Battle was ran under the Saturday Heifers / Sunday Steers format. At first I didn’t think I would care much for this format but as more shows go to this format the more comfortable we find ourselves with it. A new twist this weekend was the showmanship. Showmanship consisted of two very large heat classes with two judges.  Each judge selected 5 from each heat for their champion drive. Again we felt out of our element a bit, Karee was not sure which judge she should be paying attention to. In the end she ended up making the cut for the judge she kept an eye on and missed on the one she did not. The Expo’s showmanship is going to be ran almost the same so we will be a little bit more ready for it.  This also marked the first show we only took one calf. The previous shows we had been bringing the backup calf for companionship and we could tell Ol’Boy was a little nervous all weekend without his usual stall mate. We also left the camera at home so it will be another week before we get an updated photo up. In the end Karee & Ol’Boy ended the Weekend with a 5th overall in Judge B’s Showmanship ring and won both steer classes on Sunday. Currently she is in the top 5 with showmanship points and Ol’Boy is in the top15 in cross bred steer points.
