I was just curious whether blowing out and carding leg wool helps "train" and grow the wool. I show cattle and i know rinsing and training the hair is imperative, but for lambs does it really make a difference and does it help the hair?

My second question was about feeding. My lambs are on a 15% protein lamb feed with rolled barley and a bit of flaked corn. I'm a fan of the feed cause it really gets them growing while keeping them cool. I would like a little more protein, however, and i feel like my lambs are getting soft despite exercise and the rack. Is there anything i could add to their ration to put a little firmness back on em? I was thinking calf manna? If there are any other reccomendations, that would be great. We have a show in 2 weeks!

Give me a day or so to think about the feed but the leg wool you don't need to card it or brush it or anything of the sort. I'm assuming these lambs are going to be slick sheared so you can just clean the legs, blow them out, then card them, and take the hand clippers and clip just the tips of the wool to make the legs appear square. Don't take off too much wool on the legs. Do all of this right before the show. haha I hope this helped!

On the leg wool we spray with Revive and blow in at least 3 days a week. Keep them muzzled except when feeding time. It will help keep that leg wool thick and easier to shape. They will sometimes pull the hair out if they get to itching (thats why we muzzle).

On the feeding issue, we use a 15% protein 5% fat ration with Sheep formulated Sure Champ, or you can use Showbloom, the Sure Champ is cheaper.
