Need suggestions on getting a heifer hauled from Iowa to Pennsylvania or possibly somewhere in between that I could pick her up. Thanks

The Big Show / show heifer silhouette
« on: November 03, 2014, 07:51:29 AM »
I'm looking for a show heifer silhouette I can use for a project, want to try to etch on glass.  I googled it but everything looks like a steer.  Anyone know where I can find a heifer, just needs to be pretty basic? I'd like to be able to make it different sizes. thanks

The Big Show / Re: Birthdates

It's rather frustrating when you try to teach your kids right from wrong.  They get tired of getting beat by heifers that are several month older.  At one show I asked an exhibitor when their rather large heifer would calve and if it was truly the age it was supposed to be it would have been calving around 18ish months old, bred about 9-10 months old?.  So I think the heifer was at least a few month older then her "birthdate" or they just don't care if the heifer lives or not.

What part of the US do you live in? On the east coast there is a feed store in MD and there is a feed store here in SD that has some of the best fat steer feed. Id suggest adding in some steam flaked corn!
what's the feed store in MD and what feed are you talking about?

I'm curious as to why also.

Seems to me they only like the huge ones.

The Big Show / Re: dying cattle

Excuse my cynicism and naivete but this just seems to confirm and reinforce the fake nature of showing cattle.   I guess I should dye my spotted cattle before I send them to market,  or maybe dye my red cattle black before marketing.
We dye our black cattle black.  Sometimes the black gets some red in it from the sun.  Just makes them look better.  Didn't change anything about them.

If she was pregnant and early embryonic death occured, the test could still show up positive, have her manually checked.
That's happened here.  Cow didn't come back in heat the first cycle after breeding.  Blood test pregnant, but then standing again after the positive test.

Yes indeed, BlkAngus, I would not use this bull on a cow that will have trouble pushing out a 95 pounder. Our four by this bull all came unassisted at 105, 95, 90, and 90 pounds. The rest of our Angus calves came between 65 and 85 pounds. That being said, they are very impressive calves next to the herd mates in terms of style and mass.
thanks for the reply  :)

If you decide to stay Angus, look into SCC First-N-Goal GAF 114 from Select Sires. This bull really adds rib and bone! His calves should start appearing at shows this year. I feel that he would mate very well with that cow.
I wonder what the birthweights and ease of delivery are that got him a -10 CED epd.

I'm also curious how you preg checked them.  I just had a heifer that was palpated open.  Didn't see any heats, blood tested her and it came back preg.  I plan to test her again with the next batch just to confirm.

The Big Show / Re: Leasing programs for club calves - for kids
« on: March 11, 2014, 06:56:37 AM »
I guess I just have a different philosophy about all this than you guys do.  I'm old school, I still feel like the point of the program is for the kids to learn about the business of producing livestock, not just having expensive hobbies.  Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
I'm right there with you!  While showing is fun, at the end of the day it's the bonus for working hard and learning about beef/beef production.

I had trouble with the semen, only got one to stick out of 4 straws.  I'm not sure why.  Looking forward to the calf.
