The Big Show / Re: Let's see some new calves!
« on: March 30, 2020, 08:24:43 PM »
We are just starting to calve now, this guy is 4 days old and is a double bred Frontline and pictured with his dam.Every animal in his 3 generation pedigree is home bred and every female is a member of our Helianthus cow family.

I was sorry to hear about the passing of Phil Butterfield.I will never forget his genuine hospitality on a cold January evening and the stimulating Shorthorn conversation that ensued.I was also quite impressed with his operation and facilities.

I think value in a cow family is realized when the breeder makes an effort to preserve and enhance the traits that led them to purchase the original foundation female.I have told this story on here before but in 1973 I purchased a Helianthus heifer from the Haumont herd that became the foundation female to my Helianthus cow family.Except for one short visit in 1988 I did not return to the herd until 2005.As we toured the herd I asked Mary Bell Cooksley if she had many Helianthus cows in the herd.At that point we were approaching a group of about 25 replacement heifers. She told me there were 3 in that group and I found them with 4 picks.Mary Bell then proceeded to tell me one of the traits of that cow family is a long dry spell between heifers.I have seen that in my own herd as well.

Our Jr. herd sire Wolf Ridge Forefront H50 has a stacked pedigree for maternal performance. His dam is an ASA Pacesetter dam and his sire is an ASA Performance sire. His  maternal granddam is an ASA pacesetter dam as well and her paternal grand dam is an ASA Pacer Performance dam,her dam in turn produced two PPD's.His one and only grandsire is an ASA Pacesetter sire and his maternal grandam was out of an ASA Pacer Performance dam.TH,PHA,DS,and Myostatin free.

I was perusing the Paint Valley bull sale catalog and noticed that Roan Brute's maternal grand dam is the dam of lot 3 and his maternal great grand dam is the dam of lot 5.

Good observation Mark. What I meant by my statement that these cattle keep growing is that  they don't stop at weaning.Should of clarified that. Our females calve at 24 mo.some younger. There have been a few exceptions like when I eliminated fall calving or a bull went bad but 24 mo. is an important criteria here.

His sire weighed 2270 last year I would expect this guy to be close to that. These cattle keep growing.

Yes Dan the heifer pictured above is a double bred Frontline and since her sire is Double Brute she has 3 shots of 26a close up in her pedigree. Most of my cattle are red but a few roans turn up and I am not ashamed of that, even thinking about keeping a roan bull calf  to use here. The pedigree Librarian posted above is  my Rosa's Command's 05 bull.He is the last herd bull I have purchased.  Mary Bell Cooksley gave me the pick of her bull calves back in 2005.He sired a few influential females here including the dam of Frontline.I have attached her picture standing next to a very good Canadian bull out at Paint Valley.
The Librarian brought up the Lavender Roan color and I must confess I don't get out much but I have only seen that lavender color in the Haumont cattle.
