The Big Show / Re: Moto Moto sired calves (updated pictures)

Pericles is listed with Cattle Vision.  Genex still sells some semen even though they don't list either bull.  Other semen companies have been reluctant to list Moto Moto or Pericles.

We sell direct.  Slow process, but both bulls are working.   Pericles sired the champion char, champion simmental and 3rd AOB at the PEI show in 2017.

What's everyones thoughts on breeding a bull to his sister?

Has anyone tried it,did it work out?

Some of our best cattle are half sib matings.  Both sire on sire or dam on dam.

Where can you get Moto Moto semen?
Genex may still have some.
We have both conventional and sexed heifer semen available at Hawkeye Breeders in Iowa.  We have conventional semen stored with Genex in Billings Montana
Thanks

(clapping)  Was waiting for you to chime in-well put-and the f-1s (if thats what they are lol) you post allays look good. Funny how most of the pure cattle are pretty frail looking-them Galloways aint. O0

Yes, The Galloway crosses well with most breeds.  Really works well on Brahma influenced cattle.

What bull could we use, (looking for a pure breed Angus not really a clubby)to help level this heifer out and put more bone on her frame?/// No picture-but if you are looking to stouten up and add bone-you are looking at the wrong breed O0

The Big Show / Re: Calf Born with Intestines Out- Anyone Have this?

Worked on a ranch in MT back in the mid 1990's.

Purebred Horned Hereford with a full blown schistosomas reflexus.  Calf was completely inside out.  Calved guts first, then skeletal structure all four legs pointing backwards.  Quite the sight.

Breed - GALLOWAY (Solid Colored)

Have not been many changes in our breed, ever.  We still strive for the characteristics that separate us from the mistakes of the masses.

We didn't give up our breed identity to be "accepted" or for the association to make $$$$.

A description of a Galloway from the late 1800's still describes cattle being used today.

Still a true 100% Full Blood.

Very good heifer LLBUX. I've been tempted to try a little Galloway juice but I worry about them being too hairy and hot for our summers. Do they go stand in the creeks and ponds like the THC clubbies?

Our Galloways cattle handled the heat and humidity ( 100+ heat indexes) better than the neighboring Angus and Simmental herds.  Ours were out grazing while the neighbors herds were bunched in the corners fighting flies.  There was a pond available and only the few head of Angus we had used it.

The Big Show / Re: Belted galloways

We just bought a couple belted galloway heifers..this year they are bred to a gelveigh bull. Next year we were thinking going possibly clubbie with them. Has anyone else raised galloway? What are people breeding them to? Thanks

I raise the original solid colored Galloway cattle.

We have had success with walks alone, and no surprise.

Eye candy and his sons have worked back over Galloway females.

We sell a lot of semen out of our Moto Moto and Pericles bulls to use on clubby bred females.

The Big Show / Re: A good read on birth weights
« on: December 02, 2016, 10:35:42 PM »
The "old cowboys" all used the 8% rule. The idea was that any cow/heifer should be able to have 8% of her body weight in a calf assuming it is a normal presentation without complication. Example - a 1000 lb heifer should have an 80 lb calf without and complications if presentation is normal. The "old cowboys" also studied the way the bulls were made, clean fronted bulls with smooth shoulders and nice heads were selected for calving ease prospects. I think that we should all take a lesson from the "old cowboys" and pay attention to the animals more and the papers less with their computer generated guesses on what the bull will produce. There is far too much manipulated data being turned in for the EPD's to be even slightly usable in many cases. In my opinion, a 40 to 65 lb calf is a throw away. Yes I will concede that there are a few that occasionally go on and perform but the percentage is relatively small.  If your heifers can only physically have a 60 -70 lb calf unassisted, maybe you should be looking for a different maternal base for your herd. RW

Could not agree more.  The low birth weight mentality has created a cowherd that struggles with "normal" sized calves.  I prefer using 10%.  Heifers have to have pelvic area.
