The Big Show / Old Dogs and New Tricks.....Facebook
« on: September 12, 2012, 08:06:31 PM »
I never thought I'd see the day, but so far this Facebook marketing thing is kind of fun. Talk about a brave new world....

Here are couple Mercedes Benz heifers I've had fun working with the last few weeks.

Thanks to all who provided the impetus to bring this project, if not to completion, at least to the starting line.

And to all you techies, this social media stuff is like work to us old fogies. Give me a feed bucket and scoop shovel any day!   (lol)

The Big Show / Tyson Bull Calf
« on: June 26, 2011, 04:17:37 AM »
We haven't had a bunch of them here, but CMAC Tyson has been one of the most consistent sires I've used over the years. Here's a February 3/4 Maine calf we'll be showing this fall out of a OCC Legend cow. Wish I had a better profile picture, but haven't been able to get my finger on the trigger when he's posing lately....

This is a steer planet recycle originally purchased from Hangonsloopy in Ohio. He's now two yeas old and slightly used but still moderate, sound and very gentle. Photos are of his first calf (weighed 79 pounds) at 1 day of age. Asking $1500. Good, fault-free bull.

The Big Show / Clean stout white SH bulls?
« on: March 28, 2010, 05:25:28 PM »
My daughter decided she wants to shoot for a blue roan out of her PB Maine BK Power Plus cow. Cow is about a frame 6, correct, and reasonably deep. She has worked well with Ali in the past. Birthweight has not been an issue on this cow's first 5 calves - all <80 pounds and unassisted. Looking for some power and base width. The Buddy Love photo is really cool, but not his PHA test. Any clean, easily available bulls punched out of the same mold? Opinions on Bartender? Thanks in advance.

The Pennsylvania Center for Beef Excellence (http://www.beefexcellence.com/) is one of my wife's clients. She consented to adding a link to The Planet.  Lots of good beef-related info here.

The Big Show / Soon-to-be orphaned calf
« on: May 06, 2009, 07:14:14 PM »
I realize and appreciate the plethora of experience here, and I'd like to tap a little of it.

Situation Cow that freshened about 10 days ago was diagnosed with listeriosis this evening. I'm going to put her down in the morning. Still trying to decide what to do with the calf.

Possibility #1.  Wean the calf. Question: How easy is it to try to start a calf on milk replacer at this age? Would you recommend a bottle or bucket ? The calf is not especially tame.
Possibility #2  There's a show heifer that's about 75 days old that should be weaned pretty soon anyway.  Is it a pipe dream to hope that we can graft the orphan calf onto the show heifer's dam and wean the older calf instead?

Any other ideas or advice?

Thanks a million.

Couple 2009 babies enjoying the sunshine.

The first is a my daughter's first bred and owned heifer (3/4 Maine).  Hard Core x Fear This son.
Second is a WMW x BK Power Plus steer.  Our first clubby bred calf ever.  He's kind of fun to look at.

The Big Show / My students thank you!
« on: March 20, 2009, 05:11:25 AM »
I'm  am in the throes of teaching a meat animal growth and development course to about 125 college animal science majors. These students don't know it, but they owe a debt of gratitude to a couple of folks on this board for unwittingly providing some great class material.

Specifically, the awards go to:

1. Knabe  for posting some great links to a couple of myostatin haplotype papers.  They fit extremely well into our myogenesis discussions.  (clapping)

2. DL for the osteopetrosis (Marble Bone) primer.  That, plus a little bit of web surfing, added some life and practicality to a dull-as-dirt bone lecture yesterday.  (clapping)

Tip of the hat to these two - and others who have added to the discussions.

The Big Show / Rebreeding aborted heifer
« on: October 26, 2008, 04:45:22 PM »
How soon after an early term abortiion should I expect a heifer to start cycling?  She was 60 days along about October1 when she slipped her calf.

Thanks for any experienced wisdom.
