The Big Show / Executive Order calves?
« on: March 09, 2016, 06:18:49 PM »
Anyone have Executive Order calves on the ground? I have seen one bull calf and (oh boy) are they good. I have one coming end of April out of a Uno Mas / Grandmaster cow.

Looking for best buy to get a few CIDRS.  Like 5 or less without having to buy a bunch of them.  Or is 10 the least you can purchase?

The Big Show / help with SH bull choice (roan or white)
« on: April 30, 2015, 11:44:19 AM »
So getting ready to make our annual semen order.  I always let the kids pick their bulls on their cows.  My boy has a mutt.  She is SH/Herf/angus cross.  My least favorite cow of my boy's, but he loves the heck out of her.  This will be her second calf.  She currently has a heifer calf out of a heifer safe black angus bull.  She is really tall, narrow topped and has no butt.  (Boy I'm making this sound pathetic).  My boy wants to breed her to a roan or white SH bull. Goal to get a better heifer.
I have one straw of JPJ in my tank but wanted to get some back up semen.  Any ideas? Preferrably $25 and under?  Was looking at Saskvalley Yesterday 116Y?  Bonanza appears to be sold out?
This is the only pic I have of her as a weanling.  Not the best but all I have.
Thanks

So my friend as a rancher has a lot of commercial, "range cows" that spend most of their life on grazing permits in the desert scrounging through this drought and then surviving tough high desert winters. They are "survivors" and not "show cows".  He just wants to get decent 4-H steers for his kids.  Obviously he would like to say he have show stock from years of detailed breeding, but he really dosent although his kids are working on it through breeding projects, etc.  Has anyone got some wing dingers, or surprise calves by breeding some of todays top clubby bulls to plain jane or even not so pretty cows?  Any pics?  My friend thought about pulling 10 or so head of the better mamas / milkers and wanted my help throwing some clubby semen in them.  Most are Angus / Hereford crosses or Sim / Angus crosses. Seems like most of his cows are a little leggier, and narrow. Thanks

Anyone have any pics of Yardley Utah calves?  A friends sent me some and I'm pretty impressed I can't get them to download off my phone.  Pretty cool looking for sure.

The Big Show / MAB semen
« on: December 11, 2014, 04:52:54 PM »
So the magic question.  What is it worth?  I have 5 original MAB straws I bought Nov. 2013. Have no more plans of using him.  My semen rep told a few people that I have it and some want it.  They keep asking how much?  I see it's $200 on most distributors?

The Big Show / Simmi observation
« on: October 31, 2014, 06:28:15 PM »
For a couple years now I sound like a broken records on what Simmi bull to use on heifers.  My hands down favorite is Ebony's Grandmaster. Easy calving, running around in minutes, easy dispositions and great mama's once grown.

I notice the Champ bull from Denver, TNGL Grand Fortune 2467 - sired by Grandmaster

High selling bull at NWSS, WS A Step Up X27 - sired by Grandmaster

Glad to see he is working and he will continue to be in my tank.

The Big Show / Check out the auction page
« on: October 17, 2014, 06:13:56 PM »
Just looked at the JS Club Calf Online Exclusive sale here on the Steeplanet auction tab.  There are some really nice steers that someone possibly could pick up for a great price.  One day left of bidding.  I like lot #1 and #3 a lot.

Looking for a smoke, yellow, white, or silver steer for our Labor Day fair 2015.  April or May calves seem to work out the best.  Does not have to be clubby, but needs to be moderate and wide topped.  Located in SE Oregon. Thanks Ryan

The Big Show / County Fair pics!
« on: September 03, 2014, 05:42:07 PM »
Well for the second year in a row, my son (now 13) has won Reserve Grand Champ market steer.  We had a field of about 50 steers this year.  He was a late May calf that we got from Mill Iron A livestock in (Wyoming & Idaho).  I believe his dam is Red Angus and Sire was Key's Tenacious a Charolais bull.  He was down right awesome to work with this year.  Gentle and easy finishing.  Not the best pics, but I'm one proud papa.
My daughter won junior showmanship champion with her PB simmy steer out of NLC Upgrade.  He was a toad and had lots of compliments but simply too big.  He weighed in at 1550 but it took that to finish him.  Per ultrasound, he had a 17.46 inch rib eye.

The Big Show / Cattle prices wow!
« on: July 22, 2014, 10:59:02 AM »
Just saw last night that a full truck load of 500 weight steers went for $3.00 a pound.  I think it was through Superior video livestock auction. I believe they were out of SE Oregon or Northern Nevada.
Wow!

The Big Show / 5.5 day Sync let me down
« on: July 17, 2014, 06:47:17 PM »
So after getting really excited about trying the 5.5 day CIDR Sync program with an extra shot of (PG) when pulling the CIDR's, I am really disappointed.  I only did 5 head, but first round 0 took.  Just got my biopryn blood test results on round 2 and zero / zippo.  So now I have 5 of my best cows "off".  Out with the herd bulls I guess.   I'm going back to the 7 day sync.  I was 100% on the same cows last year.
And yes, checked tank, all appears to be normal.  Used two bulls Hoover Dam Angus and NLC Upgrade Simmental.

The Big Show / AI'ers please give me some confidence
« on: June 12, 2014, 03:59:06 PM »
Just finished up doing a few cows last weekend on the 5.5 day protocol.  I think I like it a lot.  Seemed to get some really strong heat signs by using it.  Anyway, this is only my third year at AI'ing and only do a handful of cows each year (10 or less).  Each year the first 5 cows I exit the cow thinking "Man, did I get it in the right place?"  I've never felt so unsure about something in my life each year in June!  Some cows appear to be in heavy heat by actions but when you get inside them it does not feel right.  Of course there are the few where cervix and uterine horns are so clear and easy to find it makes it easy.  But so far this year, almost every cow I touched left me thinking I did not do it right.  I guess in 28 days when I blood test we will see.  Last year I felt the same way and got 8 out of 10 to stick.  Is it just me??? :)
