The Big Show / Hereford Bulls
« on: September 16, 2014, 08:23:18 PM »
What Hereford bulls are people excited about? My girls have been showing Herefords, and they have a few to breed this fall. They've used some Revolution and About Time...not sure what some of the others are by. They want to add muscle and mass without extreme birth weights, and we like em to stay sound and productive. What do people think of this Lambeau bull from Topps in ND? Open to suggestions...

The Big Show / Old Simmie Bull Photos
« on: September 02, 2014, 11:18:12 AM »
I'm looking for two photos of older red Simmental bulls--Red Brother and Red Alert. I've searched online and can't find anything for either bull...even contacted Accelerated Genetics about Red Brother and they can't seem to find a photo of him either!

I'm wondering if anybody might have a collection of old semen catalogs and wouldn't mind scanning a photo and sending it to me at seehimdesign@gmail.com

The Big Show / Photo of SM bull GW-CPL Red Alert
« on: August 10, 2014, 04:14:17 PM »
Maybe somebody can help me out here... I'm looking for a photo of a red Simmental bull from 1990-something...the bull's name is GW-CPL Red Alert. I've searched for him online and can't come up with anything. Does anybody happen to have that in his or her stash of Simmie memorabilia?

The Big Show / Maine Bull Stinger...I need some information
« on: September 07, 2013, 01:23:39 PM »
I'm looking for some information on an old Maine bull called Stinger...he was a red & white bull that was around in the early 90s...I thought he was a Cunia son, but I'm not sure about that. I need to know ANYTHING anybody knows about him... Pedigree, availability and retail value of semen, any registration numbers with any associations... All I have is a name and a semen code MA 336 and I'm not having any luck finding more.

The Big Show / Blazin Hot calf photos
« on: October 14, 2012, 11:11:03 PM »
Thot I'd post a couple of photos of some of the earlier calves by PRS Blazin Hot. Both of these heifers are out of purebred registered Angus cows. Hope to have a few more photos of more calves soon!

The Big Show / Kenneth Ambrose Memorial Heifer Scholarship
« on: September 07, 2012, 07:19:38 AM »
Back in 2006, we held our first Open House at the Farm to celebrate 35 years in the Simmental business. In conjunction with that event, we held a private treaty silent auction of cattle, and we came up with this idea to give away a heifer to a young person who wanted to get started in the Simmental business. We sold enough cattle that it took us three years to be able to have another sale, but we've had one every year since 2009, and we've continued this program to give away a heifer.

This year, we've changed the name of the program to the Kenneth Ambrose Memorial Heifer Scholarship in honor of my 4-H agent who passed away in 1992. He was a great mentor and a good friend, and a strong advocate for all the kids in our area who were interested in any type of livestock. We've invited our two guest consignors to our open house to donate a heifer as well, so we'll be awarding three $1,200 scholarships that will be used to purchase a heifer calf. We also work with other business partners who have donated to support the program...Performance Feeds will donate 500 lbs of feed to each recipient, and ABS is donating 5 straws of semen. Others have donated that will allow us to give vouchers to alternates to help purchase a heifer if they wish.

The website should be up today...I know yesterday EDJE was still working on making it live. You'll be able to download the scholarship application there and read all the details about how this works if you're interested. You can also email me at martin.farms@yahoo.com and I can send you the application. It involves doing a project that somehow relates to the beef cattle industry, but it can be pretty much anything that a kid might be interested in as long as he or she can tie it to the cattle industry! The deadline is September 15, so it's coming soon!

MartinFarmsOpenHouse.com is the site. The online sale catalog should be there as well, and you can see all the heifers that are available to purchase. The scholarship winners will be able to buy at the opening bid price before the auction begins, so they can also opt to put money with their scholarship money and purchase a heifer priced at more than $1,200, but every open heifer in the sale qualifies.

The Big Show / Looking for prospect steers
« on: July 13, 2012, 08:10:05 AM »
I'm trying to help a buddy find a couple of steers for 2013. His daughter will be a senior next year, and he wants to find a pretty decent steer for her last year. Looking for one, two, or three pretty decent calves that have definite potential. He'd probably spend in the neighborhood of $2k on one that we think has the potential to win the county show. It's the biggest county show in the state with about 30-35 calves, and the competition is pretty tough, but not impossible to compete with. There will likely be 3 or 4 pretty good steers that could be in the hunt...he wants to be one of them!

Please let me know if you have spring steer calves or know somebody who would have competitive steers he could buy in that price range. Thanks!

The Big Show / Stinger semen
« on: February 25, 2012, 12:51:45 PM »
What's semen worth on the old Maine bull Stinger? I don't really follow the Maine / club calf thing much...I judged a show several years ago and ended up buying some Stinger semen after using a steer sired by the bull and still have a couple of straws in the tank. I don't think I ever used a straw or maybe just never had a calf by him... Wondering if that's worth anything now or not.

The Big Show / Testing for genetic defects in show cattle
« on: January 07, 2012, 06:50:47 PM »
I'm planning to test a heifer for TH / PHA and want to be smart about spending the $ to do it. I've heard some talk that carriers of TH / PHA have more hair / more muscle / more bone, etc...
Can somebody help me out and tell me more about which phenotypic traits might suggest a certain genetic defect status? Thanks!
