The Big Show / Interesting Article
« on: November 14, 2013, 05:02:41 PM »

November issue of NM Stockman - pages 87 & 98.   Have never met the author but I applaud him for speaking up and thank the magazine for printing the article......this subject has been swept under the rug for far too long.  We don't show steers, but have seen this "who's your daddy", & "who's your fitter" mentalities in the open shows too.  Have won a few & lost a few - have often shaken my head & said "that's a da*n good animal" when I've stood behind such an animal - but sure do resent getting beat by nothing more than a popular bloodline or good clip job.  It hasn't stopped me from continuing to show because I've walked for a lot of conscientious & honest judges but have also been subjected to some that have been blatantly biased & using the "buddy" system.  It's time to weed them out.

The Big Show / 1st calf of 2013
« on: March 01, 2013, 12:59:34 PM »
Chaco's (Red Angus) first calf is here, 82 lbs out of our biggest & heaviest BW cow so I expect lower weights on the rest (pictured at 6 days old).  Easy-born & up nursing withing 20 minutes.  Sorry about the quality of pics - I hate my camera, or it could just be the photographer!  Next up is a Caphice calf (hopefully a heifer too) out of our matriarch Shorthorn cow.

The Big Show / Our girls
« on: June 17, 2012, 05:54:52 PM »
Don't really need to have them slam-dunked, we know they have faults, but would appreciate constructive opinions.  We were so happy to FINALLY have some SH heifers born here instead of bulls.  Haven't been clipped or fluffed, just rinsed & brushed.  One is 04/11 the other 07/11.  Thanks.

The Big Show / Shorthorn heifer bull
« on: March 12, 2012, 02:33:10 PM »
Anybody have advice on a CALVING-EASE Shorthorn bull with sexed semen available?  FINALLY had a couple of heifers, after years of bull calves, and need help on a bull to AI them to!  Want sexed semen to increase the chance of more heifer calves....  THANKS.

The Big Show / Thanks to Steerplanet

I recently had a big calf born which started going over at the knees on about day 3, getting so bad that it hurt me to watch him walk.  Soooo, I used your fabulous search feature to see if anyone had posted a similar problem.  Lo & behold, our beloved Red had posted the same situation a few years ago & Terry suggested it may be navel ill & to treat with penicillin.  I've never had experience with this but thought treatment definitely wouldn't hurt him.  Treated with 5cc of long acting penicillin twice & now he's bouncing around the pasture with no hint of bowing over.   There is such a wealth of knowledge on this site and I'm so glad your here -- THANK YOU!

The Big Show / Clipping
« on: January 22, 2010, 05:13:12 PM »
Ok all of you folks with WAY more experience than me (which includes anybody who has ever turned on a clipper)...I've heard different opinions & need your advice.  If you are trying to make a neck look longer & cleaner do you leave the hair the same length as the neck all the way to the inner corner of the eye or do you stop at the outer corner of the eye?  I've just started clipping this past year & watch the pros every chance I get at shows but this is one I haven't figured out.  Thanks for any advice.

The Big Show / Good Luck at Denver

Good luck to all of you going to NWSS.  I must admit that I lived there for 5 years & really don't care if I never see Denver again!  Have fun & do well.

The Big Show / Merry Christmas
« on: December 16, 2009, 09:57:06 AM »
Have been busy getting calves ready for Phoenix but wanted to take time to wish all Planeteers a Merry Christmas and a very healthy & prosperous new year.  Although I don't contribute much to the Planet, I have found it to be the most social and informative web site around and appreciate the fact that we all can have flowing (sometimes aggressive) discussions on such a huge variety of subjects yet we always come back to one basic -- our love of cattle!  Thanks to you all for a great year.

The Big Show / Bull are clean!
« on: May 26, 2009, 06:03:43 PM »
Hooray!  Finally got the test results on the 7 Red Angus bulls we raised & sell semen on ... THEY'RE ALL OS FREE.  We're still waiting on the AM results but I expect them to be free also.  Just sent in blood samples on our two new herd bulls.

Due to no rain in the last 9 months & none in the near future we are forced to reduce our herd & are offering for sale a really good group of young registered Red Angus (& a few Durham Red) cows & heifers.  You can check them out on our website www.slash-d-three.com.  We've already severely culled the herd, so this is an honest good group of girls.

The Big Show / Any Planeteers going to Phoenix?
« on: December 04, 2008, 12:26:00 PM »
Anybody out there going to AZ National?  We'll be taking some of our Reds.  Wish we could take some of our Durham Reds but can't because of the show's 3/4 blood rule---darn it!  Would love to actually get a chance to meet some of you.  This site feels like family, even when we have "heated" discussions & differences of opinion!  Thanks you guys for being yourselves...

The Big Show / Just want to brag
« on: October 02, 2008, 03:41:57 PM »
Just want to post a pic of my grandson's 1st grand champion win - with his Durham Red heifer at the AORB show at South Plains Fair in Lubbock TX.  He's always had to stand in the shadow of his big brother at the shows and he loves this heifer so very much, so I have to brag!

Upcoming Shows / New show at South Plains Fair
« on: June 23, 2008, 02:02:41 PM »
For anyone who is interested, the South Plains Fair at Lubbock TX has added an AORB show to its open breeding cattle schedule.  Normally they only offer classes for Shorthorn, Limousin, Angus and Hereford which didn't help those of us with "other" breeds.  This new show will offer classes for animals papered with a "recognized association".

Their website (includes premium book & entry forms) is www.southplainsfair.com, email is info@southplainsfair.com, and phone is 806-763-2833.  The facilities are good & the superintendents go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable.  We hope to have a good turnout for this show -- it took a lot of persuasion to convince the powers that be to put this new show in.

The Big Show / How are the Iowa members?
« on: June 17, 2008, 05:11:17 PM »
Has anyone heard from road warrior or any of our other Iowa folks?  The floods are so terrible there I wonder how everyone is doing.  We're sitting here in country so dry & parched it's hard to comprehend the problems they're dealing with in the midwest.  I just hope they're all on dry ground.

The Big Show / What color patterns are your Durham Reds?
« on: April 22, 2008, 02:06:25 PM »
I'm curious as to what color patterns you all are getting on your Durham Reds.  Ours have mostly been "skunks", dark red with white bellies & sometimes little roan patches on the tail & head.
